Starred in the films "Brokeback Mountain", "The Patriot", "Ten Things I Hate About You", and in the upcoming "Batman" movie as "The Joker". Actor Heath Ledger Is Found Dead -from MSNBC News The actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in an apartment building in SoHo, according to the New York City police. Mr. Ledger was 28. At 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at an apartment in the building for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger’s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities. The police said they did not suspect foul play and said they found pills near body. Mr. Ledger, a native of Australia, won acclaim for his role as a co-star in “Brokeback Mountain”, a 2005 film. The film, based on a novel by Larry McMurtry about two cowboys who fall in love, won critical acclaim. Reviewing the film in The New York Times, the critic Stephen Holden wrote, “Mr. Ledger magically and mysteriously disappears beneath the skin of his lean, sinewy character. It is a great screen performance, as good as the best of Marlon Brando and Sean Penn.”

And just a few days after Brad Renfro was also "found dead" (i.e. drugs and alcohol suspected) at 25, only that time in L.A. A friend, reflecting on Ledger's death, just told me that a lot of Hollywood actors go through some sort of crisis at 25-27 years of age these days. Something about a fear of getting older. Wonder how true that is?

Wonder how true that is? Demographics, youth market share, fear of fame or looks fading. It's no wonder many child actors or youthful looking actors and singers in their 20s tend to suffer from serious problems like alcoholism, drug addiction, and emotional trouble. Only few child stars and youthful actors are lucky to grow up to remain in high profile fame in show business without many personal demons...Ron Howard, Kurt Russell, Jodie Foster to name a few.

Yeah, just look at how messed up the Olsen Twins and Lindsay Lohan have become, to cite just three examples... I wonder if gender also plays a part.

The age "27" was fatal to several actors/performers facing crises, often drinking or drug-related. Among the unfortunate members of the "27 club": Brian Jones (1969) Jimi Hendrix (1970) Janis Joplin (1970) Jim Morrison (1971) Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan (original keyboardist for the Grateful Dead) (1973) Kurt Cobain (1994) Jonathan Brandis (2003)
