Al Jaffee's MAD Fold-Ins
|
|
|
Here is a link to a surfeit of Fold-Ins, past and present by MAD Magazine's Al Jaffee, courtesy of the NY Times. He's been at this since the early '60s and is still at it, doing the writing, the artwork and the conceptualization himself. Fans of MAD from its glory days are in for some serious memory-jolts. And, when you think about it, Jaffee's Fold-Ins were animations. True, they told their stories in two frames (before and after), but I think that's what makes them all the more remarkable. Continued good luck and good health to Mr. Jaffee. http://www.nytimes.com/...FOLD_IN_FEATURE.html

I can't remember the link, but Google should lead one there---- The rock star named Beck had a video for his song called "Girl", which was a salute to the Mad Fold-ins....it began with Beck folding a brochure which changed the meaning altogether.... Later on in the video, entire streets, sidewalks and buildings "folded in" to reveal a totally different message than the signs on the structures originally meant. Al Jaffee, I believe, is mentioned on a sign or written somewhere in the video. A Google like this should yield the result, and I know the video is available online: beck girl video "mad fold-in" cd

Thanks, cd! I took your advice and found this link to Girl by Beck: http://www.motiontheory.com/work/beck_girl Brilliant work. I love the way they utilized the East L.A. environs. Truly inspired. And the nod to Al Jaffee was hilarious and subtle. (See attachment, his name's in red.) Oh, and "Girl" is a great song, to boot. Thanks, again.

Thanx backatcha! Because that was the exact webpage I remember. First time I saw that was on The Tube (defunct music video channel). The action went too fast for me. Now w/ QuickTime I can freeze it & see the before & after. I am not a rock n roll fan....but that video was downright clever. cd

Jaffee's up for a Reuben nomination for Cartoonist Of The Year, & I'm rooting for him.

I saw (in one of the Mad specials) a reprint of the very first MAD Fold-in, from No. 86 (April 1964). Unfolded, it showed Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton among a crowd of fans. Folded in, it showed a stranger puckering up to become Liz's next man -- for the time being!

I remember that one! (And my Mom would later give all my MAD magazines away…) Happy 44th Anniversary to Al Jaffee's Fold-In!

Speaking of PUCKERING, that reminds me of MY all-time fave Fold-In, in MAD #166 (April '74).....it's very un-PC by today's standards, as it pokes fun at gay guys--a large picture of two new fathers at the hospital with their spouses (who've just become new mothers), folds into the two males puckering up to each other! (Q: Which particular group believes it's helping to conquer the overpopulation problem? A: Gay Power!)

Wow! That brought back some fond memories... I used to read MAD Magazine regularly as a kid, although sometimes I didn't always get some of the more subtle bits of humor. I also enjoyed Jaffe's regular feature, Snappy Comebacks to Stupid Questions.

Not to digress from Mr. Jaffee, but the above-mentioned April '74 issue (#166) was also the issue with the infamous Alfred's-middle-finger-closeup! That was one of the mag's biggest debacles: many stores & newsstands refused to stock it, making sales fall drastically; and publisher Bill Gaines & editor Al Feldstein sent apology letters to each of their subscribers.
