"Albert Nobbs" Toons. You Must Register Before You Can Post

Tomorrow, "Albert Nobbs," a movie about a woman who disguises herself as a man, opens in theaters. So, to have a little fun, I'm posting about female cartoon characters who disguised themselves as men for one reason or another.

"Ladies' Night At The Lodge," The Flintstones, Hanna-Barbera, 1964. Displeased with the rule that wives can't become Lodge members, Wilma and Betty disguise themselves as Water Buffaloes, and sneak in undetected. However, after a brutal initiation ceremony, they decide the Water Buffalo Lodge is no place for them.

"The Arabian Knights," Hanna-Barbera, 1968. The best example ever! Princess Nida often disguised herself as men, including Vangore, in order to fool the Knights' enemies, and even imitated their voices!

"The Piranha Plot," Jabberjaw, Hanna-Barbera, 1976. Jabberjaw disguises Shelley as a Dutch farmer named Mr. Kelpington in order to throw the Piranha off his trail when the farmer sees the villain's rocket land near his property.

"The Smurfette," The Smurfs, Hanna-Barbera, 1981. After Papa Smurf changes her from evil to good, Smurfette disguses herself as Lone Smurf to rescue her fellow Smurfs from Gargamel.

"Deadly Junket," Jonny Quest, Hanna-Barbera, 1986. Jessie Bradshaw, who was later changed to Jessie Bannon, escapes from Dr. Zin by disguising herself as a boy.

"Twelfth Night,' Shakespeare: The Animated Tales. Self-explanatory.

"Mulan," Disney, 1998. The title heroine poses as a male soldier to take her father's place in the Chinese army. Her ruse is eventually discovered, but in the end, it is she who leads the army to victory.

Male-to-female cross-dressing is common in anime series, but the reverse is relatively rare.

In the anime series Ouran High School Host Club, main character Haruhi Fujioka crossdresses regularly and is initially mistaken as male by the members of the club. Her short hair, slouching attire and gender-ambiguous look cause her to be mistaken by the hosts for a male student. The hosts all agree that Haruhi would be a good host, thus making her join the host club. Ultimately, she agrees to join the club as a host herself (dressed as a male) in order to pay off her debt.

In one episode of Pretty Cure, Nagisa Misumi disguises herself as a man twice in an attempt to reclaim Mepple, who had been confiscated. In a later episode, Nagisa plays the part of Romeo in Verone Academy's school play of Romeo and Juliet.

Princess Knight: Princess Sapphire dresses like a man so she can fight in her adventures.

In both Sailor Moon S and Sailor Stars seasons of Sailor Moon, Haruka Tenoh (Sailor Uranus) wears masculine clothes most of the time, and even chooses to wear the masculine version of her school uniform, to the point of being mistaken for a boy by other characters.

Elsewhere: In The Simpsons episode "Girls Just Want to Have Sums," Lisa Simpson disguises herself as a boy named Jake Boyman in order to learn math when the school is segregated by gender.

In the first Little Lulu cartoon, "Eggs Don't Bounce", Lulu steals eggs from a chicken by disguising herself as a black man (including standing on stilts). She enters the chicken coop carrying an axe, and says "I sho' do love FRIED CHICKEN!". Of course the chicken flees in terror, and Lulu gets the eggs.

In the last season of Sailor Moon "Sailor Stars" There is a male music group called the Three Lights--who in actuality are the Sailor Starlights. It's a bit of a debate on whether they are actually transgendered or not as they have the bodies of men as the music group-- and actually transform into women when they become the Sailor Starlights. In the Manga, they are merely women masquerading as men.

Natasha Fatale sometimes disguised herself as a male along with Boris such as a Museum guard in "Painting Theft" "Alf the Elf" in "Topsy Turvy World" and Dr. Watkins in "Box Top Robberies" Generally she wears a mustache.

In the Powerpuff Girls "Bubble Boy" Bubbles disguises herself as Boomer in order to capture the remaining two Rowdyruff Boys.

In The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy "The Bad News Ghouls" Mandy disguises herself as a boy named Manfried in order to play baseball on Billy's team because Billy doesn't want any girls. (ironically enough, Mandy is much better at playing baseball than any of the boys on the team)

In an episode of "A Pup Named Scooby Doo" "For Letter or For Worse" The ghost of Al Cabone is a woman named Prestina. This is not the reason I mention this episode however as many a woman in the many incarnations of Scooby Doo has portrayed a male monster. The actual reason I mentioned this one in particular is because the other two suspects in the episode, The Great Mel and Pop 'O Connor are actually all Prestina in disguise attempting to make both male character appear to be the ghost in question.

The only problem is that the gang notices her ring in all of her disguises.

"Ranma 1/2" had the character of Ukyo Kuonji in which Ranma-male usually mistook for a boy in childhood...she turns out to be a girl.

"Urusei Yatsura" had the character of Ryunnosuke...a girl who was raised and dressed as a boy by her rather deranged father. Ryunnosuke yearns to act and dress more feminine and usually angrily battles it out with her equally skilled father in martial arts for laughs.

The anime "Dirty Pair" had the hot-tempered redhead special agent Kei who was mistaken for a man when dressed in civilian clothes in a few episodes...although her skimpy two piece work costume leaves no doubt that she is all "woman."

Any cartoons there that have a reference of "Victor/Victoria"? (I feel that the film "Albert Nobbs" has that "Victor/Victoria" feel).
