Disney's motion-capture "Alice in Wonderland," starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as the title character, brought in $34.5 million over the weekend to remain the No. 1 movie at the North American box office for a third weekend in a row. Directed by Tim Burton, Alice In Wonderland has made $265.8 million in domestic grosses and $565.8 million worldwide -- extraordinary results for a film screened in March, normally a slow period. "You rarely see this kind of domination by one movie at this time of year," said Hollywood.com box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "Normally at this time of year, films don't make this kind of money, and they don't hold in this long." According to Dergarabedian, this is Burton's highest-grossing film to date, eclipsing 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ($206.5 million). In second place was live-action 20th Century Fox family film Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which opened with $21.8 million. Disney's Alice was shown in 3,739 theatres for an average of $9,229 per venue. Diary of a Wimpy Kid was shown in 3,074 locations for a $7,085 average per screen. Hollywood revenues totaled $130 million for the weekend, up 23% from the time last year, when the top film was the thriller Knowing with $24.6 million. Domestic revenues have reached $2.43 billion this year, up 10.3% over 2009, Hollywood.com says. When higher ticket prices are accounted for, movie attendance is 8.2% up from last year. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at United States and Canadian theatres were released by Hollywood.com. Final figures are expected Monday.
