Does Ludwig van Beethoven know? December 16, 2011- coincidentally or not, the 241st anniversary of his birth- is the date set for Alvin and the Chipmunks 3D, the partly animated third entry in Twentieth Century Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks movie franchise. Alvin films have been a successful holiday venture for Fox, New Regency and Bagdasarian Pictures. Alvin And The Chipmunks, which was released on December 14, 2007, made $217.3 million domestically and $144 million in foreign markets for a total of $361.3 million. Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, which came out last December 23, made a total of $429.8 million -- $217.4 million in North America and $212.4 million abroad. Scheduled to a week after the Chipmunks threequel, on December 23, 2011, is Steven Spielberg's 3D family movie Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of Unicorn. Meanwhile, Disney this week set a March 11, 2011 release date for Mars Needs Moms!, director Simon Wells' 3D adaptation of Berkeley Breathed's children's book. Seth Green, Mindy Serling, Dan Fogler and Joan Cusack are among the voice cast of the movie, which so far has the date to itself. Meanwhile, Columbia Pictures pushed back the release date for the 3D-animated movie The Smurfs. Featuring the voices of Neil Patrick Harris and Katy Perry, it's been rescheduled for August 3, 2011. Earlier, it was planned to reach North American theaters on July 29 next year.

Looks like everything is going 3D. I blame myself, b/c I go to all these films. My consern is that the directors have to adjust the story in order to have a scene that uses this effect. I'm sure it's the same issue with any advancement in movie tech: with sound the studios made more musicals, color, esp. on TV, was used boldly in many scenes, etc.
