"La Leyenda De La Nahuala," by Ricardo Arnaiz, was acclaimed as best animated feature film (Mejor Largometraje de Animacion) on Tuesday at Mexico's annual film awards. It was the sole nominee in the category at the 50th Ariel Awards. In contrast, this year's winner for best animated feature film (Mejor Cortometraje de Animacion) had some competition. De La Vista Nace El Amor, by Miguel Anaya Borja, won out over Francisco Athié's Balance cósmico and Lourdes Villagomez's Síndrome de línea blanca. The Ariel Award for best picture went to Silent Light, a film about forbidden love among Mennonite farmers. The movie won five Ariels on Tuesday, including best supporting actress for Maria Pankratz. Silent Light centers on a farmer who is torn by love of another woman. Carlos Reygadas, who shot the story in the Low German dialect used in an isolated northern Mexican community, won for best director. Alexis Zabe won for best cinematography. Released under the titles Luz Silenciosa and Stellet Licht, the film won a special jury prize last year at Cannes. Other Ariel Award winners: Irene Azuela, best actress, Quemar las Naves Jorge Zarate, best actor, Dos Abrazos XXY (Argentina), best Latin American film Los Ladrones Viejos, directed by Everardo Gonzalez, best documentary Parpados Azules (Blue Eyelids), directed by Ernesto Contrera, best first film Horror film Kilometro 31 (Kilometre 31), Mexico's top box office performer last year, won five awards in technical categories, including best special and visual effects.
