Aubrey: 1980-1982 You Must Register Before You Can Post

Hi guys, this recently also jogged my memory of between 2002 and 2006 of Radio-Canada (CBC in french) as well, i remeber this always airing after specfic Japanese cartoons (like Remi and that one cartoon that was sort of like Zorro, all i could remeber is that he had black hair and a black cape and lots of armour and was from the 1970s), warning for all the british users who clearly remeber this as there are spoilers ahead, it starred this simple orange ball guy (in the same vein as the white small guy in the Pink Panther) who looked very exactly like Proffesor Kapp Sule from Gumby, everything did not speak a word, but still made sounds to indicate expression, had charmy upbeat theme tunes, and the animation was sure a no brainer that you could always tell it was a diffrent animator (too bad none of those guys were ever credited, let alone specifically) and that they were mostly single animator cartoons.

Apparently, Not much is really known about it, and only six episodes are known to exist based on my research, there have been said to have been 39 (around 40) episodes and also based from memory from seeing it on TV i think they were more than six to exist, i remember one where there was a Magic Show, there was also one where it had the Dentist and there was one with the take on Jack and the Beanstalk.

Here are the six episodes in existence.

Aubrey's Garden [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pg0ryW0jdb8&feature=related]

Aubrey's Apple Tree [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MQJt1oKG4w&feature=related]

Aubrey's Boat [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6ZUBG3YMrU&feature=related]

Aubrey Discovers Soap [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnYO1rKI22c&feature=related]

Aubrey's Fire Engine [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpLPlhrtLsQ&feature=related]

Aubrey Framed [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTsIwPCKYLE&feature=related]

And it appears this was directly done on cell (including paper and filming), based on that, i think the ones that fade directly into the credits (Aubrey's Boat, Aubrey Discovers Soap) are from the first season (which i belive has 13 episodes, correct me just in case) and the ones that fade to black (Aubrey's Garden, Aubrey Framed) before the credits are defiently from the second season (which i belive also has 13 episodes as well) and that the ones dated 1982 are from the third season (again 13 episodes, i think).

I guess (because i actually really don't know for sure) why this is so forgotten is that i belive this was the latest filmed on nitrate film stock, which is known to be the most flammable film materials ever and is the reason why several Tom and Jerry and other MGM cartoon films no longer exist in their regular form anymore, BUT maybe i'm entirely wrong and false about that, anyway, this cartoon was created by Derek Phillips (from Roobarb and Henry's Cat) and it made in his own independent studio, called D.P films, is Derek still around by any chance?
Anyway the other crew and the only credited were Stan Rockfield and Ted Hawyard and painter Nancy Waller.

and based on the opening theme use on Aubrey's Fire Engine, i must say that one is most defiently the first episode.

i belive the episode order and season number on wikipedia is false.

Whoops i gotta go now, i'll have more to say later, meanwhile let's hear your say and i'd like to know more about it and also see more of it as well.

Even the British Film Institute has little information on Aubrey (click for a link to BCDB); it lists no personnel except for Derek Phillips himself.

More on the Aubrey series is available here:

www.toonhound.com/aubrey.htm
www.thechestnut.com/aubrey.htm

Beyond his series work, Mr. Phillips directed some odds and ends of educational animated shorts in the 1960s and 1970s. Besides BCDB, this will link you to them: ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/sift/individual/4861?view=credit

As for whether Derek is still around, I couldn't find anything online saying that he's no longer with us.

Re: Aubrey: 1980-1982 [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

Hmmm, Reading some of the info you provided, i see that Derek Phillips' film credits extend to as early as even 1960!, i guess he was also around long enough to be seen animating early into the 1940s (and even had a rank assistance, meaning that of an assistant or bits and pieces artist, maybe taking place in the late 1930s) , or maybe he was one of those earliest independent types (like Bruno Bozetto) and based on new info of Aubrey, Derek's Later credits and series included Crazy Crow from 1991 and also something like Little BRRRMM which was from 1994 (and nothing, not even artwork from both these shows let alone footage is available for both those shows i mentioned) and also Aubrey was originally first shown on ITV in the early 1980s, so there has to be more to this series than this, and also i'm pretty sure all the episodes exist, don't they?

Anyway, i also read that Stan Hayward, Ted Rockfield and Derek Phillips himself were all still working for Bob Godfrey when these were made, Bob Godfrey is most defiantly still with us, so maybe it's possible that he knows some of this show too and maybe even the creator, Derek Phillips (bits and pieces are fine).

Stills from some of Derek Phillip's films can be seen on the Lost Continent site.

Re: Aubrey: 1980-1982 [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

I'm reading the link you sent to me, right now, and as i read i'm picking up more facts.....

* I've just found out that Derek Phillips himself was at least prolific and a well known enough contributor to the animation scene for quite a while, having odds and ends at many independent (including educational) animated shorts in the 1960s and the 1970s including the early 1980s as well, even Aubrey was well known and watched and remembered even today as lots of British children watched it in their youth and remember it fondly and the one of the comments in the link (from Derek Hayes, no relation) tells a story of Derek Phillips coming to the National Film school around 1975 or so to talk to Phil Austin and of course Derek Hayes about his work and what i pick up from Hayes, it says a bit of his personality that he was a really nice guy who was dedicated to his art, it was great to know at least some personal facts about this gentleman.

* Oh, looks like i found some pictures and even a bit of footage from Little Brrmm, and to keep some facts straight, it was actually from 1992 rather than 1994 & after that it's exactly when he seemed to have vanished from the business and view without a trace since he hasn't done really anything since that cartoon and only very, not just very, but extremely little info has been written of his shows, making all of his stuff extremely rare and very unavailable for years and even not much track has been caught up on him after Little Brrrmm, i have a feeling that he may no longer be us anymore Shocked UNLESS someone truthly confirms that he is indeed still around, still nothing from Crazy Crow it seems.

*And i'm defiantly seeing the stills right now, and as i gather from the stills, it seems that his early work (Passing Phase and a Note from Above and even those of the Losers Club and Weird) are actually pretty, pretty violent and rather creepy, sure nothing to get curious about, that's for sure and also i was mostly there just to see more of Aubrey.

Also speaking does anyone have more episodes of Aubrey besides six episodes?, if so, let me know, i'd gladly watch them.
