BCDB Forum 101- How to do Stuff on the Forum!

Hi:

Here is a short primer on how to do some of the more advanced stuff on this forum!

1) Adding Images to your Posts!

This is a fun one. The best way is to have the image on your local hard drive. (It is possible to link directly to images already on the web, but- if you are linking to images on any site but your own, that is impolite and stealing bandwidth. So, I would prefer members use this method unless the images are from BCDB or your own site!)

Again, start with an image on your hard drive. In your post, you will see "Attachment:" in an orange bar beneath the main posting window. Use the "Browse" button to find the image on your HD, and click OK. Check the "Inline Image" box and (this is VERY important!) then click "Upload Attachment." 1/2 way there!

Now, within the post window, place the cursor where you want the image. From your toolbar, press the "Add Image" icon. Instead of "Image Location" in the add image box, choose "Inline Image." You will then see your image (If not, you forgot to upload the attachment!). Choose your image, hit OK, and you have an image in your Post!

A) Adding Links to your Posts!

This is an easy one, once you learn it. Really, there are two ways. The long way is to type out the sentence you want with the words you want to link in the sentence. Then highlight the words you want to link with, and hit the "Add URL" icon. Add the URL and press OK- there you go.

Now, the "Easy" way. Let's suppose you are responding to a post about Finding Nemo, and you want to link to that film at BCDB. Below the Post Message box is a "Search BCDB" box- this one is specifically made to help you in posts! You can enter "Finding Nemo" there, and it will open a new window for you, so you will not loose your post! Anyway, in the new window, simply Highlight the already-linked title "Finding Nemo" and copy that (Ctl-C) to your clip board. Go to your post, place the cursor where you want the link, and paste (Ctl-V) the link there- the text AND the link follow, thus: Finding Nemo.

The forum message poster is pretty smart- as you cut and paste, MOST formatting will follow- links, images, fonts and sizes... so play around- it can be a lot of fun!

I) Adding An Icon for your Profile!

These need to be no larger than 100 pixels on a side- if they are larger, the forum will resize them for you.

Log in and go to your "Profile" then "User Profile" page. See the "Icon" area? Browse to find and upload your image, and there you go!

a) What are all these "Apprentice", "Inbetweener" or "Intern" Tags?

These are various terms from the animation industry, chosen to (hopefully) invoke some sort of felling for various levels of expertise in that field. In our case, they reflect the number of posts one has made to this forum.

Because I enjoy a good surprise, I have decided to make the various levels rather secret... I do not tell users (or even the moderators!) at what number of posts on changes levels to the next. Nor do we post the various levels in order- you should be able to figure that out if you really want.

You may also notice a few users have very specific, fun titles. These are moderators, who are allowed to choose their own tags.

a) How Can I be Kept Up To Date on Cartoon News?

Or keep up with Alex's newest Animated Word posts... or STOP getting updates on these posts?

Well getting them is easy! From any forum that interests you, simply be logged in and press the "Subscribe To Forum" button.

To manage (subcribe to more, or end subscriptions), simply go to you Profile and Subscriptions page, and check or uncheck forums as appropriate.

Thank you for your attention. There will be a test on these materials on friday. Please bring a blue book and number two pencil.
