Benoît Lamy, a Belgian motion picture writer-director whose debut film, Home Sweet Home, met with international success, died April 15 at his home in Braine-l'Alleud. He was 62. Born in Arlon, Luxembourg on September 19, 1945, Lamy co-directed the 1972 animated film Cartoon Circus with Jean-Paul "Picha" Walravens. It marked the directorial debut of "Picha," who later won success with risque cartoon satires Tarzoon: Shame of the Jungle, B.C. Rock and The Big Bang. Home Sweet Home (1973) told the story of a revolt by boarders in a Brussels old-age home. It received 14 international prizes. Winning a diploma and nominated for the Golden Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival, it was also honored as far afield as Montreal, Budapest and Teheran. In Home Sweet Home, seniors hamstrung by unreasonably restrictive regulations stage a revolt -- supported by nurse Claire (Claude Jade) and social worker Jacques (Jacques Perrin) -- which comes to the attention of the police. With Gabrielle Borile, he shared the Golden Bayard for Best Screenplay at the Namur International Festival of French-Speaking Film for 1997's Combat de fauves. The movie was also nominated at the festival for the Golden Bayard for Best Film. Lamy was also a director and screenwriter for Ham from the Ardennes (1977) and Life Is Rosy (1987).
