I'd say '40's, '50's, '60's and early '90's.

Re: Best cartoon era [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

Interesting question. I bet I'll have a lot of company in saying that the '70s & '80s marked an awful lull in cartooning, but as for the best? I'll have to go with the "postwar" decade: 1945-1954.

Re: Best cartoon era [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

i guess it really depends on what type of cartoon you like. for actual shows, you can't look before the 70's really... except for hanna barbera. for shorts, you can't really look much later than the late 60's (except for tom 'n jerry). so i would say the 80's myself, b/c i grew up in that era and most of my favorite shows were on in that decade. that or the early 90's.

It doesn't have to be "shows", just animation in general, from the 1910's to today.

I disagree, I think the 80's defined a new era in television animation and imo, I look at that period from a somewhat cynnical perspective as the beginning of the end of classic animation and animated television series. It was definitely a significant period and had a huge impact on the direction (past, present and future) of cartooning.

O.k., I'll take the bait. Who are your favorites from the '80s and why? I'm not trying to put you on the spot—I'm really interested in your answer.

Re: Best cartoon era [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

Well that's a difficult question because there is always the misconception between quality series and the nostalgia factor which is associated with anything related to your past but I'll try to ignore the latter and list some of my favorite 80's cartoons which I believe truly were significant other than the impact that they've made on my childhood and memories. I'll also ignore the many rehashed cartoons that were readapted from original 50's-60's series, although many were excellent, it's not a fair comparison so I'll stick with original animated series...

Off the top of my head:

Alf Tales, Beetlejuice, Cops, Count Duckula, Danger Mouse, Dino-Riders, Dragon's Lair, Disney Afternoon Series', Garfield & Friends, Real Ghostbusters, GI Joe, Heathcliff, He-Man & TMOTU, Muppet Babies, (I said I wouldnt list revisited series but I have to name this one) Pup Named Scooby Doo, Raccoons, Silverhawks, Smurfs, Snorks, Ninja Turtles, Thunder Cats, Transformers, Visionaries, etc...

I have many other favorites, but these all stand out as original series' with innovative plots and substantial characters. .

I think the best era was the 7 minute time frame on January 5 of 1946 when "Book Revue" first came to theatres. Before and after that era was kinda 'iffy'.

You all are wrong! It's the early 1930s before the Hays production code came in and before Walt Disney created "characteriZation" and cartoons started to get better animated but not as "funky!"

PS: I wish people wouldn't put all those stupid quotes at the ends of their posts, because I keep reading them over and over again. BO-OORRRRING!

Re: Best cartoon era [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

I'm with Collin on this one (though the post-war era of the middle-to-late forties was great too) I love the Fleischer and Iwerks stuff of that era and has anybody since made toons as completely bizarre as some of the 30's stuff like Iwerks "Balloonland" or Eshbaugh's "The Sunshine Makers" & "The Snowman"? In the later years, only the Seuss stuff nears that level of utter strangeness.

Re: Best cartoon era [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

My favorite era is the 1940's. My favorite directors Tex Avery, Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones and Frank Tashlin were at the top of their form at Warners and MGM -- along with Friz Freleng, Bob McKimson, Art Davis and Hanna & Barbera. In fact, every animation studio was doing their best work during this period which, besides my favorites from Warners and MGM, would include Disney, Lantz, Columbia (briefly when Tashlin ran it), and even Famous and Terrytoons.

Even the cartoons produced for the Army/Navy such as Private Snafu and Hook were really good. For something that was only meant to be ephemeral and seen by few people the standards of quality were very high.

To be more specific, I would say the best period for American animation was between 1935 to 1957, with the pinnacle occurring between 1942 until 1953.

Re: Best cartoon era [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

Hmm. That's a tough one to say. I think it had to be between the 1960's and the 1980's. IMHO, the 80's had some of the best Saturday Morning cartoons out there. Of course, I caught most of the 60's schpiel during the 80's and 90's so............ (but then again, so did most of my friends)

I also liked the old Bugs Bunny cartoons of the 50's. Chuck Jones especially!

Re: Best cartoon era [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

I pretty much agree with Mark. I think mid 30's to mid 50's was the best. I really can't think of many cartoons from that time I don't like. I'm also a bit of a swing/jazz music nut, so the huge number of cartoons with that theme really appeals to me. The list of truly great cartoons from period is amazing, and even more amazing is how watchable much of it still is today. There were definately more hits than misses.

I also like some of the pre-code stuff. I really enjoy Flip the Frog and Betty Boop, wonderful, suggestive, surreal stuff.

Re: Best cartoon era [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

I'd have to say the 30s. Because animation was still in its "thrill of discovery" stage, a mere youngster as it were. Also, the decade has (in my book) the greatest percentage of hilarious, LMAO cartoons--chief among them the Fleischer Popeyes.

I think it depends on which animation house for with decade. Like Disney - 50's-70's (which odd late 80's and early 90's), HB - 60's-70's, WB 30's-40's and 90's and independents - 80's-90's. Overall though I'd go for 50's-70's.

Re: Best cartoon era [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

In my honest opinion...1937-1967 and 1988-1996.

Why? Because many cartoons in the late 30's to the mid 60's were very creative. Though it nearly died-out by 1960, there were a few cartoons being made for theateres at the time. And in the late-80's to mid-90's because I grew up with those cartoons.
