Beverly Hills 9/02/10

Today's date -- if you follow the month-day-year sequence for abbreviating dates -- is 9/02/10. Yes, there is a party to celebrate the 1990-2000 TV series Beverly Hills, 90210, winner of four Golden Globes during its run. To mark "90210 Day," Larry King is hosting a party in Beverly Hills to "celebrate the city with the zip." It's headlined by Natasha Bedingfield and accompanied by the three-day Taste of Beverly Hills food and wine festival. Beverly Hills, 90210 focused on a group of rich kids who went to West Beverly High School. But even before it ran, DiC Entertainment had a cartoon series called Beverly Hills Teens. It centered around the lives, loves and longings of a group of typical fun-loving teenagers (sound familiar?), from Radley the surfer-dude to the arrogant Pierce, who just happen to be disgustingly wealthy. The show ran in syndication for 65 episodes from 1987 to 1988. Here are some "90210" references in cartoons (thanks, IMDB!): Animaniacs: "Of Nice and Men"/"What a Dump"/"Survey Ladies" (1993) Yakko and Wakko say "Hello, 90210!" as Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling walk by. The Simpsons: Marge vs. the Monorail (1993) Show within the show mentioned called Springfield Heights 90210. Animaniacs: "King Yakko" (1993) Yakko says he's king of an area in Anvilia 90210; the number is homage to this show. Beavis and Butt-Head "Career Day" (1994) While watching the video for "Real Love" by Slaughter, Beavis recognizes Shannon Doherty from the show. Casper: "Dead of the Class" "A Spooky and Poil Moment" "Y-Files" (1996) Watch for the "Beverly Hills, 90-Boo-10" reference. Family Guy "I Never Met the Dead Man" (1999) Peter watches the high school through a cardboard "screen" and thinks it's Beverly Hills. Family Guy: "The Story on Page One" (2000) Peter mentions the show when talking about Luke Perry. Jimmy Neutron: Win, Lose and Kaboom (2004) A character in this TV special mentions a soap opera called Andromeda 90210. Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story (2005) In this direct-to-video tale, Stewie references he could fit in with the kids from 90210. Chicken Little (2005) In this Disney flick, the aliens say that the chickens are in violation of galactic law 90210. American Dad!: "Stan of Arabia: Part 2" (2005) Roger tells someone all about lots of episodes from this show as though he were telling a story. Family Guy: "Bango Was His Name, Oh!" (2006) A scene spoofs the Peach Pit; Tori Spelling voices Donna. Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008) Quote from this partly animated Disney film: "I'm from Beverly Hills. You know, 90210?" The Simpsons: "Waverly Hills 9-0-2-1-D'oh" (2009) The title, as if you didn't know!

The main "Beverly Hills Teens" bad girl was named Bianca who was a snob. She was aided in her schemes to spoil the good teens' fun by her overweight assistant Wilshire. Larke was the blonde good girl of the group and the friends in her circle included Pierce, Radley, Jett, Nikki, Shanele, and the school gossip Switchboard. Hanna-Barbera released an original made-for-tv movie titled "Top Cat and the Beverly Hills Cats" in the late 1980s with TC and his New York City alleycat gang moving west to be near a wealthy female feline. Arnold Stang played Top Cat's voice along with the original tv show cast members Marvin Kaplan as Choo Choo, John Stephenson as Fancy Fancy, and Leo DeLyon as Spook and Brain. Avery Schrieber played Benny The Ball (Benny's original voice actor Maurice Gosfield died in 1964).
