Brigham Young University announced Thursday morning the formation of the BYU Center for Animation, intended to give students going into animation a better chance to work with those currently in the industry. BYU officials made the announcement during a special event on the university's Provo, Utah campus. Brent Adams, a faculty member in the BYU School of Technology, will be the center's director. Although the school offers animation courses in its College of Fine Arts and Communications, but the Center for Animation is designed to bring together courses in the engineering, art and science departments. "It's an honor. It's a challenge. We're very excited about the potential," Adams said in an interview with Salt Lake City's Deseret Morning News. School officials said that they hope the center will help students work within the industry while studying at BYU, raise awareness of the animation program, and give them an official place at the school. Some additional faculty will be hired, and the animation curriculum will be revised, said Adams. "We are in discussions with the studios to figure out what that curriculum should look like. And we are going to try and create opportunities for more students on campus to be involved with what we're doing." The BYU Center for Animation will be housed within the Fulton College of Engineering and Technology. However, the animation major will remain within the College of Fine Arts and Communications. BYU's animation program dates from the fall of 2001. Graduating films have been screened at major world festivals. They have received high-level awards and recognition from such organizations as the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which hands out the Emmys.
