Standup comic Robert Schimmel, often heard as a guest on Howard Stern's radio show, died Friday evening after suffering serious injuries in a car accident. He was 60. Schimmel died Friday evening in a Phoenix hospital, said his spokesman, Howard Bragman. He portrayed Robert in Wild Weekend, a 1997 episode of Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. Pokeymom, a 2001 episode of The Simpsons, cast him as a prisoner (the family was attending a prison rodeo). Born in the Bronx in 1950, the comedian was a Scottsdale, Arizona resident. He often guested on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Schimmel was a passenger Thursday in a car driven by Aliyah, his 19-year-old daughter. According to Bragman, she swerved to avoid another car, and the vehicle she was driving rolled to the side of the freeway. Aliyah is hospitalized in stable condition, Bragman said. Cancer on $5 a Day, his 2008 memoir, told of his battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was married to Vicki Rhoades from 1977 until their 2000 divorce; they had three children. He had another child with his second wife, Melissa, whom he married in 2000; the couple filed for divorce. Robert Schimmel's son Derek died of leukemia at age 11. His survivors include his younger brother, comedy writer Jeff Schimmel, and his sister, Sandhi Schimmel Gold. Jessica Schimmel, a daughter by his first marriage, was an assistant to the producers on two episodes of The Simpsons.
