Cartoon Character Game
|
|
|
ADMINISTRATIVE NOTE: THIS POST HAS BEEN EDITED TO INCLUDE GAME RULES, PLAYER SCORES, AND THE LIST OF CHARACTERS USED THUS FAR (WHICH PROBABLY WON'T BE EXACTLY UP TO DATE, BUT HOPEFULLY WITHIN 20-25 CHARACTERS OR SO). PLEASE SCROLL PAST THESE ADDITIONS TO FIND THE FIRST MYSTERY CHARACTER POST OF THE GAME, AT THE VERY BOTTOM OF THE POST.
PLEASE FOLLOW THESE RULES IF YOU WOULD LIKE PLAY: - Please limit your characters to those found in theatrical or TV animation (including commercials). No video game characters if they haven't likewise appeared in a cartoon.
- When it is your turn to post the mystery character, first verify that your character has not already been used by checking against the master list found below. Give at least 3 clues per day (roughly, no one is going to be timing you). Don't give more than 9 clues total for the character, but you can reveal the character after only 6 if you prefer.
- If no one has correctly guessed the character after 6 clues (or if you wish, 9, but not more), reveal the character and take another turn. If no one gets the second character after the requisite number of clues, reveal the answer but do not take another turn. Instead of taking a third turn, you must pass to someone else. To whom you pass is up to you, but please try to be fair.
- Please do not ask for any extra clues or for information not covered by the clues already given.
- Our goal is to only take around 3 days per character, 4 days if 9 clues are given. This is to keep the game going at an enjoyable pace. In the event that a character generates a LOT of guesses, that time limit may be waived.
- A point is given for each correct character guessed. In the event of two people both posting correct guesses, the one who posted first will be given the point and the next turn.
- Please try your best to make your clues descriptive of the character- no one has any fun when no one can ever guess the character.
- Please limit your mystery character choices to those that have appeared primarily in the US. It is an unavoidable fact that the vast majority of people who post here are from the US, which is why we ask that all characters used appeared in the US in one form or another. This does not eliminate international characters by any means- just make sure you can provide information that would identify the character to someone who speaks only English and has never been outside of the US (you can see in the character list below, there are international characters that have already been used, but in each case they've also appeared in the US and in English).
- The intentions of the member posting the mystery character will always be considered in any disagreements that may (hopefully not) arise, but as always, the word of the Administration is final.
- These rules may be amended at any time without prior notice.

******************************************************************** I'm now going to play a game about cartoon characters. Now since we may know a lot about these cartoon characters, I'm going to do something different... Now to play the game, you play it like this.... I live in a farm in Indiana. I like to read Books. My imagination gets carried-away many times.

Orson the Pig, from U.S. Acres (part of the Garfield and Friends cartoon of the late 80s-mid 90s). So does that mean I go next? Do you have any other rules- like restricting to certain genres of animation, TV only or can we include features, only 3 lines for a description, etc.?

Yes...you go next, the animation is unlimited so you can use TV and Movie Cartoon Characters, and three lines per description. If no one gets it the 1st time give-out three more hints, and if they don't get it then, just give-out the answer!

Ok... lessee. I realllly like gold, jewels, money, and fine art...especially if it isn't mine! I have at least two friends I can always count on- sometimes even three (depending on her mood). My yellow/off yellow tie looks best with a colorful blazer- either green or red.

This has be the flamboyant thief Arsène Lupin III, known for sending his business card to intended victims beforehand. From the manga by Kazuhiko Kato, better known as Monkey Punch. Lupin the Third routinely brings marksman Daisuke Jigen with him on his capers, and sometimes swordsman Goemon Ishikawa or cuddle bait Fujiko Mine. His gold tie (intended color) is one of his quirks / trademarks.

Cool, I got one right. Who'd'a thunk it? Okay, this character is a young lady and an accomplished musician. This character has toured many cities around the world, and has even toured outer space! This character can wiggle her ears, which usually occurs reflexively, not consciously.

My turn now. Most of the time, I behave like the cowardly lion. I follow the man with a sword. My master and I fight against a real bonehead.

He's Loopy de Loop, who appeared in theatrical cartoons from 1959 to 1965. H-B made cartoon feature films with Yogi and others, but L de L starred in the studio's only series of theatrical shorts... it was distributed by Columbia.

I'm a really mean 1930s dude. I get even angrier than usually when things don't arrive on time. My neighbors include a calm, optimistic husband and wife.

This sounds a lot like Mister Bang, a generally irritable fellow. His neighbors are the Skipper, who runs the local trolley, and Katrinka, an émigré from Eastern Europe, with a kind heart and tremendous muscles. Mister Bang gets his short fuse lit when the Skipper mismanages the trolley car, or when a beach outing proves anything but relaxing. Dang, I love that one gag, where Mister Bang rages that he's missed his connecting train. "Katrinka fix!" she trills, and this woman picks up the railroad tracks, and begins pulling them toward herself faster than the locomotive can outrun it! Wotta woman!

Yes, indeed, it's "The Terrible-Tempered Mr. Bang"! Calling him "generally irritable" is an understatement, given that he's at least twice as angry as Yosemite Sam. Mr. Bang appeared in two of the three Toonerville cartoons that Van Beuren Studios produced as part of its Rainbow Parade series: Trolley Ahoy and Toonerville Picnic, both released in 1936. These were based on Fontaine Fox's Toonerville Folks comic strip. Unfortunately, there weren't more of these, as the studio closed down right after Toonerville Picnic came out. To me, "The Powerful Katrinka" seemed Dutch, but never mind. The Skipper and Katrinka were a well-matched pair. They were married to each other, which was a pleasant departure from the endless boyfriend-girlfriend pairings of animated cartoons of the era.

Cool. Toonerville Trolley and Toonerville Picnic appear on some Public Domain compendiums of older cartoons. Katrinka's origin was never specified; I was speculating East Europe from her accent, and on an old joke of period. "In Russia, girls have measurements of 38-24-36. And so is other leg." Oh, and a Bow of Respect to Tammitoon; nobody knows Hanna-Barbera like Tammitoon. Good work on Melody. Oops, gotta run. I'll have my Mystery Character ready by 1600 EDT. Later, gators!

Phew, busy day. More'n usual. Okay... This character must not be very popular: he's been shuffled from studio to studio since the Forties. This character has gone from Fleischer Studios to Famous Studios to Filmation to Hanna-Barbera to Warner Brothers, currently. This character is routinely portrayed as an all-American, but is, in fact, a resident alien.

Yes, the character is Superman. I can't imagine Superman going through the formal process of applying for a green card; where oh where could he get proper ID from? Really, at that point, Krypton is a shambles. Most likely, he was granted citizenship honoris causa. We could delve into some really obscure characters, such as the boozy mouse Bartholomew from Disney's The Great Mouse Detective, but going too deep into the niches gets us too far away from the fun. *nudge, wink*

Surely this must be one of your personal favorites, Mister Cleveland: the dapper Jose Carioca, from the 1944 Disney film The Three Caballeros. Jose (Brazil) appeared alongside Donald Duck (USA) and Panchito Pistoles (Mexico).
