2D Animation revived.... by a CGI Company! You Must Register Before You Can Post

The word is out that PIXAR is starting their own 2D Animation Division. A company that will use the Pixar Animation Studios brand... that name which stands for supreme excellence, innovation and soul in animation today... and putting it behind the form that everyone there loves: 2D Animation.
The first film? Well, Brad Bird, who is wrapping up work on The Incredibles for Pixar is apparently going to be the goto guy on this to kick it all off with: Ray Gunn!!!

Thanks to austus for this bit of News!

Pixar was the co-producer for the 2-D animated series "Buzz Lightyear" with Walt Disney Television Animation.

And of course, Brad Bird directed "The Iron Giant" and worked on various "Simpsons" episodes.

The Web site of the school district in Corvallis, Oregon (where Brad Bird grew up) speculates -- on an alumni spotlight Web page -- that the screenwriters will be Bird and Matthew Robbins (co-writer of Dragonslayer, Mimic, *batteries not included).

The premise would be "about a private detective in an ultra-futuristic city (think Blade Runner crossed with Buck Rogers)".

Greg Dean Schmitz of "Greg's Previews" states that Ray Gunn is one of Bird's older projects. (This project was developed when Bird was at Turner/Warner Brothers Feature Animation.)

The resume of illustrator Mike Cachuela (one of the story artists for Toy Story) states that he was a story and visual development artist for Ray Gunn under Bird's direction at Turner/Warner Brothers back in 1996.

I love the irony. After Disney and Dreamworks count 2-D as dead- and precisely vbecause of Pixars output, it is Pixar that picks up the 2-D mantle. I hope they run far with it.
