Cartoon characters you simply can't stand.
|
|
|
This may have been discussed before.. but it's a good thing to discuss every now and then anyway. I love cartoons, but it doesn't matter how much you love cartoons, there's going to be a character that you really just hate. I'm sure there are many that I can't tolerate, but I'll start off with: Baby Huey. Seriously, where is the appeal in that character? I can tolerate watching the very first Baby Huey short. But after that.. I can't believe they thought he was good enough to be made into a recurring character. A big dumb manchild. It's hard to cheer on a character like that.

My daughter watches Foster's Home, and although I can get into most of the cartoons she watches (Jimmy Neutron, Danny Phantom, Fairly Oddparents, Spongebob), I just don't enjoy this show at all. <br>

Mickey Mouse. My avatar prior to now was Donald Duck, but due to the Holidays, it's changed. But to my point, the reason why I can't stand Mickey is because nothing happens to him!

Some animated characters whom I never liked. I'll go into the details why later. Right now, I'm just going to list them: Scrappy Doo Russel (Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids) Angelica Pickles (Rugrats) Helga (Hey, Arnold!) Ralph Wiggum (The Simpsons) Haley Smith (American Dad) Stan Smith (American Dad) Speedy Gonzales (I hated the shorts where he appeared with Daffy Duck) Cheese (Fosters) Daffy Duck's mean battle ax wife from the short "Quackodile Tears" (if one shot characters count).* *Why? Becasue I dislike ANY female character whose sole purpose for existing is to unceasingly emasculate her husband/male partner. A man bullying and smacking around his wife isn't funny, so why are we supposed to think that the reverse is?

Jimbo, Dolph and Kearney (The Simpsons)-these three tax my already low tolerance for cartoon bullies. Mean characters who never receive any come-uppance for their evil deeds irritate me to no end. Gus Griswald (Recess)-cartoondom's ultimate wimp/nerd/nebbish. This whiny little zero made Chuckie Finster from Rugrats look like Vinnie Barbarino. The Hip Hippos (Animaniacs)-Just not funny. Ever. Huntress (Justice League Unlimited)-I've never read any DC comics featuring Huntress, so I can't comment on her comics counterpart, but on the JLU TV show she was such a snarky, mean little hose-beast. OK, I get that she's supposed to be a badass, and granted she had a tragic past (she had to watch her parents get killed in right front of her-there's nothing funny about that), but she was always so rude, snippy and lippy to all of the other League members that I just wanted someone-anyone-to give her a swift kick in the county seat. What's even more annoying to me about Huntress is that she has legions of fans on the internet who think she's the greatest thing to happen to TV since Jiffy-Pop. I don't get why Huntress is so popular. All the JLU writers did was take your basic foul-tempered, spoiling-for-a-fight, 'not-a-team-player' archetype and put her in a bra, and all of a sudden she's everybody's favorite character. I don't like male characters like Huntress, so why should I find a female who acts like that appealing? Slimer (The Real Ghostbusters) Actually, when he was just the comic relief mascot on Real Ghostbusters I didn't have a problem with Slimer; he was OK in small doses. IMO, he only became annoying after he took over the show; when he got his own segments, his name came before the title and nearly all of the RG episodes began to focus on him. Finally, I'll just be the latest person here to say that he can't stand Cheese from FHFIF. Not funny, not entertaining, just random and nails-across-a-blackboard annoying. (This isn't a joke: when I first saw Cheese, I thought CN was trying to make fun of mentally challenged people.) The fact the shows' writers and publicity have now taken to treating Cheese as one of the shows' leading lights makes me sick to my stomach. If Cheese isn't the prime example of a 'flash-in-the-pan' cartoon character who doesn't deserve the praise that's heaped upon him, then I don't know what is.

Scrappy Doo Oh yes.. How could I forget Scrappy Doo. I love most of the 70s-80s Scooby Doo franchise, but Scrappy Doo always manages to irritate me. Except in "The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo", in which Scrappy was completely upstaged by the amazingly irritating Flim-Flam.

"Yu-Gi-Oh"- a lot of energy, emotion, and animation spent on a card game with difficult-to-follow rules. "Mighty Mouse"- particularly the 1940s Terrytoons ones. Every mouse was "good" even when they were stealing food and clowning around and every cat was "evil" even when they were acting on natural instincts and guarding whatever the mice were stealing/eating. No evil mouse or good guy cat to make things fair. Besides, Mighty Mouse never showed up until the last few minutes of the cartoon and usually to clean up the mess the "helpless" mice intentionally started.

Jerry Mouse. Yes, yes, alright, you've thwarted Tom Cat, but don't be so smug about it! Another vote for Scrappy Doo, too. Here's another- Captain Capeman from the second series of Inspector Gadget. Good. God. No. As well as making Inspector Gadget even dumber than the first series (to the point where it isn't funny any more), there's an even more stupid, laugh-free sidekick with a voice that grates! My apologies in advance if, by some quirk of fate, the creator of Captain Capeman is on this forum. But it didn't work.

A little memory free-association, as the culprits appear in my brain (I'll have more later): The Blue Falcon Sniffles Herman the Mouse Buzzy the Crow Stunt Dawgs (both the villains AND the heroes) Fearless Fly Atom Ant Charlie Dog (he's not lovable--just an OBNOXIOUS little fart!) Amos & Andy (the radio or TV versions, PERHAPS--but the cartoons, uh-uh) Popeye's "son," Junior (that goes for the brat's peers, too) The Famous/KFS/HB versions of Popeye & his pals The Chuck Jones version of Tom & Jerry Buddy & Cookie

Scrappy-Doo Batmite Mr. Cool (FONZ & THE HAPPY DAYS GANG) Dollar (Richie Rich's dog) Godzooky (GODZILLA POWER HOUR) (.. and almost any other "cute" animal sidekick. Don't get me wrong .. I like animals, and I love dogs --but the "cute" quotient in these characters is just over the limit, for me)

I could never stand the spoiled brat-type kid. I hated Montana Max from Tiny Toons, Angelica Pickles from Rugrats, Mindy from Billy and Mandy and Princess Morebucks of the Powerpuff Girls. I hate Conrad Cat from "Conrad the Sailor" where he's paired with Daffy Duck because he is boring. Scrappy-take off the S and you've got Crappy. I don't care too much for Popeye-mostly the same formula with a really ugly sailor. Also maybe because I was a little girl when I first saw him and found him too masculine for my tastes. I guess I just found him unappealing. There are at least one or two cartoons with him that I like-but that's about it.Made me like spinach though.

He reminds me of Poochie from "Itchy and Scratchy." They merely added him to boost he show's ratings, like many shows do. The second season was a completely different show from the first season as well. At least Capeman never did a rap number, like... The name's Corporal Capeman and I rock the telly, I'm half Joe Camel and a third Fonzarelli I'm the kung-fu hippie from Gangsta City, I'm a rappin' superhero, you the fool I pity!

wow-yes-Catdog-absolutely appalling not to mention gross. About Cheese from Foster's Home-my friends showed me the first episode he was in. I didn't hate him-but he reminded me of a person with autism or one who is in special ed. That's not a good thing to be compared to and rather than laugh at Cheese,I pity him. (I have a special brother whom I love dearly) As long as we're on the topic of special ed I hate Opie from Family Guy.

Casper, the Friendly Ghost. As a rule, I don't mind do-gooders. But Casper is dead for cryin' out loud. He had his chance, now give it a rest. What was his problem when he was corporeal? Was he shy? Lazy? Or maybe butt-ugly? Intruding on the world of the living trying to win people over is unnatural. I could just kill him, but what would that accomplish? Can't stand his theme song, either.

Number One on my Execrable List is A. Flea from An Itch in Time by Robert Clampett, and A Horsefly Fleas by Robert McKimson. He's the epitome of arrogant, self-serving sponges: the Maximum Mooch, so to speak. This parasite brays, "There'll be food around the corner fer me," as if the world owes him three squares a day. (AIiT) Then he's yowling, "There'll be home around the corner fer me," like there's no such thing as trespassing. (AHF) This flea needs a flea dip ... in Judge Doom's "the Dip." Agreement with Baby Huey (one joke wonder), Cheese (new age nonsense), Scooby Doo (ugly useless goofus), Slimer (inarticulate loose cannon), Scrappy Doo (Ritalin! Stat!), Corporal Capeman (human Scooby Doo), Herman (bad 'tude triumphs!?), Batmite (Scooby Doo from Ork), and Elmyra (cutesy-poo sadist). Nonagreement with Mickey Mouse (he's fine, world's haywire), Gus Griswald (one in every classroom), Mighty Mouse (saving Pearl from Oil Can Harry), Jerry Mouse (sometimes Tom's best friend), Sniffles (better mouse than Herman), Godzooky (G Junior as translator), Road Runner (Coyote's a stalker, FCOL), and Casper (died young with few friends).

Hmmmm.....Wile E. a stalker? Isn't this more like "the nature of the beast"? I believe one of Chuck Jones' rules was "Sympathy falls on the Coyote." And....for all the greatness of the character, Bugs Bunny isn't exactly a character that merits my sympathy. I get enjoyment at times seeing him "get his" at the end ("Rabbit Rampage", "Dr. Devil & Mr. Hare", "Half Fare Hare" to name a few). Also, though an admirer of the "Top Cat" TV series, stealing and mooching aren't exactly the traits I'd wanna teach my kids, if I had any (yes I know this was originally a prime time cartoon). The ending of the episode "The Late T.C." satisfies me every time (for those who aren't familiar----no he doesn't die, despite the title). cd

1) Gabby Goat was Porky Pig's totally annoying sidekick in three 1937 Looney Tunes. Not cute and not funny. He's the only cartoon character that I ever felt deserved to be hauled off and given a spanking. Moviegoers' reaction to Gabby was so negative that Termite Terrace axed his character forever. Even Tiny Toon Adventures hasn't resurrected him with a cameo... so much the better! 2) The Great Gazoo, the space visitor on The Flintstones. I know that the prehistoric series was supposed to include modern references as jokes, but this was taking a joke too far! He single-handedly made this long-running show, a favorite of yours and mine, jump the shark in 1965.
