"Crank Balls" wins prize at Sprockets kids' fest

Devin Bell's "Crank Balls" received the Audience Choice Award for Best Animated Film at the 11th annual Sprockets Toronto International Film Festival for Children, organizers announced Monday.
Sprockets' festivalgoers selected the American-made stop-motion short, which concerns the crabby Crank Balls who live in a colorless void until infectious happiness changes their world forever.
Crank Balls also received one of two honorable mentions from the jury (ages nine to 12) for Best Short Film.
The other honorable mention went to My Happy End, by Milen Vitanov of Germany. This unique animation, which makes clever use of simple paper and pen, tells the story of a dog who finds the best friend he could ever imagine -- his own tail!
Germany's animated fairy tale The Three Robbers, directed by Hayo Freitag, received honorable mention for Best Feature Film from Jury 1 (ages eight to 10). In order to avoid going to the dreaded orphanage run by a frightening "auntie," clever and charming Tiffany devises a plan to stay with three robbers in their forest hideout.
Three awards were decided upon by children's juries (two designated for feature films, one for shorts) and two audience awards were determined by festival-goers. Three additional awards for the Jump Cuts Young Filmmakers Showcase were decided by a jury of film-industry professionals, and the Students Choice Award was determined by high-school students attending Sprockets.
This year's Sprockets included 68 films -- including 26 features -- from 26 countries.
