Jan Balej's Czech feature film "One Night in One City" won the Golden Reel Award for best animation at the Tiburon International Film Festival, held north of San Francisco. Award winners were announced during a formal ceremony Friday in Tiburon, with many filmmakers, local guests and dignitaries present. One Night in One City is the first Czech film to have received an award at the six-year-old festival, held with the motto "Understanding the World through Film." Released in the Czech Republic last year, the 75-minute movie is a mosaic of animated stories which director Balej and his crew filmed over a period of six years. These highly individual tales conjure up an image of a gloomy and bizarre world, replete with ghosts and magic genies. But Balej's puppet microcosm isn’t for children; it's a spectacle for adults in the style of Jan Svankmajer. This year's festival offered 242 movies from over 90 countries, included three live-action Czech feature films. One Night in One City recently won the 2007 Czech Lion film award for the best art achievement, as well as the Grand Prix at the Monstra animation festival in Lisbon. It won awards at the AniFest international animated film festival in Trebon (in southern Bohemia) and in Bucharest. This year, the film will be screened in Argentina, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Singapore and Turkey, the Czech News Agency (CTK) reported.
