Dalton B. Sandifer Passes Away
Animation writer Dalton B. Sandifer passed away earlier today at his home in Thousand Oaks, California. Dalton- sometimes credited as "Sandy"- had a career that spanned many decades in animation, working first with Walter Lantz, and then in the mid-sixties, moving over to Hanna-Barbera. Sandifer wrote for many of the popular Saturday Morning series from Hanna, including Atom Ant, Hillbilly Bears, Wheelie and the Chopper Bunch, Dynomutt, Wacky Races and Puppies Further Adventures. According to his grand daughter Dawn Peason, "He was, in every sense, a funny, intelligent, talented artist and gag writer, as well as a proud Navy veteran, and beloved husband, stepfather, grandfather and great grandfather." Mr. Sandifer leaves behind a wife, Anita Sandifer, four step sons and their families, six grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

As a result of Dalton's contribution to DDW, I have included him in the In Memoriam list as part of my updates to my Falcon's Lair: The Unofficial Guide To Dynomutt Dog Wonder website...which, coincidentally, is celebrating its 10th Anniversary today! Still...to absent friends...

A celebration of Dalton Sandifer's life will be held after 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26 at the Sandifer home in Thousand Oaks, California. The family asked that donations be made to a favorite charity in lieu of flowers. Sandifer died at 89 of natural causes, according to an obituary published Wednesday in the Ventura County Star. First working as a technical illustrator for North American Aviation, he was hired by the Walter Lantz Co. in the late 1950s. His first screen credit was for the 1957 Woody Woodpecker cartooon Round Trip To Mars. A resident of Thousand Oaks since 1965, he commuted to Hollywood, Burbank and Los Angeles. He also worked from his home as a freelancer. Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1919, Sandifer was the second son of Onnie Leon Sandifer and Rilla Irene Strickland. He was raised as an only child, as his older brother died at a young age. When he was 2, the family moved to California. He attended schools in Culver City and Los Angeles, granddaughter Dawn Pearson said. "Rilla showered her only son with love and support, and he grew up with a flair for humor and a passion for cartoons," she said. Enlisting in the United States Navy on January 2, 1942, Sandifer served in San Diego, working with visual training aids. He worked as a commercial artist in Los Angeles following an honorable discharge. For a short time in 1967, he worked for Warner Bros. Animation. Survivors include stepsons Gene, Denny, Patrick and Timothy and their families.
