Disney animator Sheila Rae Brown dead at 71

Sheila Rae Brown, an animator for Disney and other films, died January 17 of cancer at 71, the Portland Oregonian announced. Sometimes credited as Sheila Brown, she was an assistant animator for Oliver & Company (1988) and was on the animation crew of The Little Mermaid (1989). She received special thanks in connection with the Disney feature films Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), Treasure Planet (2002) and Home On The Range (2004). Brown was a character key on the 1991 Hyperion Pictures movie Rover Dangerfield and an assistant animator on Film Roman Productions' Tom and Jerry: The Movie, released the following year. For television, she was a background artist for the Filmation Associates series Heckle and Jeckle (1969); The New Adventures of Batman (1977); The New Adventures of Flash Gordon and Quacula (both 1979); Tom and Jerry and Droopy (both 1980); Blackstar (1981); and The Young Sentinels (1977), also known as Space Sentinels. She also handled backgrounds for the Hanna-Barbera series Shazzan! (1967) and The Harlem Globetrotters (1970). Brown was born in Des Moines, Iowa on May 26, 1935. She graduated from California State University, Northridge. In 2000, she moved to Portland, Oregon. Sheila May Brown's survivors include her brother Stephen. She had another brother, Walter. Remembrances may be sent to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Oregon Cremation.

Brown was a member of the The Animation Guild's executive board from 1992 to 1998. She started at Disney way back in 1956. She was at such other studios as Sam Singer, UPA, Snowball, Ed Graham, Cambria, Rich Animation and Warner Bros. until her 1998 retirement.
