Forum Mem Cosmic Fool Has Passed
|
|
|
Forum member and contributor Cosmic Fool passed away on November 9, 2006. Coz has been an active member of this forum for three years. He has supplied us with a lot of information on British cartoons, as well as being our local expert- and proponent- of Dr. Who. I have had many discussions with Kevin over the last three years; at one point, I even asked him to be a moderator. Kevin polity refused- this was when I first learned he was not in the best of health. I have noticed ups and downs- periods of inactivity, but as soon as he was feeling better, he would jump right back in- never with a sour word or comment, but always with help and information. As such, Kevin was the ideal member here on the boards, and a daresay a friend to many people here. Coz was 42. In memory of his passing, and as a future memorial to him on this board, the Dr. Who Econ will now be called with the code "coz" instead of who. Try it- and remember our good friend and contributor.

Sorry to hear that. Never had the opportunity to cross paths with Cos, but it's sad he's not for this world any longer all the same. To absent friends...

I am totally shocked to hear this news - I had no idea he was in ill health. His imput on all things British, as well as Dr Who and Paganism, will be sorely missed, by me at least. Here's to you Coz, and may your spirit move on to a better place.

If there is a Pagan Heaven, Cosmic Fool is there! I remember Cosmic Fool from his earlier incarnation in the Forum as Kev864. His mastery of British TV was absolute (we North Americans don't have an adequate grasp), and I asked Dave to recruit/shanghai him as a moderator... this was long before Peter Hale joined us. Yes, I knew that Cos had politely declined to be a moderator, but hadn't a clue that he had any health problems. His breadth of knowledge of animation in the U.K. must have led many a Brit to join the Forum. RIP, my friend.

This doesn't sound real at all! I had no idea he was sick. I've never witnessed the death of a forum member before. Does anyone know what the poor fellow died of?

I have an e-mail to him right now. The person who contacted me did not leave an address, so I used what I had. I asked for more info, as I think it would be nice to have a bio, we know so little about him, other than his contributions here. I would like to post something a bit more personal. I do not know what he passed of. I do know he was periodically in and out of the hospital. I never wanted to pry, I figured if he wanted to tell me, he would. I noticed he posted here the day he passed away.

As I like to author & reply to threads, in blue letters. I say that the best term than died is "Entered Eternity". I created it in November of 2000 - 2003, when a friend of my mother (of forty years+) Entered Eternity. Back in the 1970's, I was just twelve, when I lost my dad! I do not like the term died, that is what led me to create the Entered Eternity term. 63x927is58401.

I like that. I have always shied away from "died" or "is dead"- too me, both sound harsh. Not that death is not harsh. I like your words- they are sensitive.

This is very sad and unexpected news for me. I had no idea that Kev was sick. I never had the pleasure of meeting him in person, but we had exchanged words here on BCDB on and off. I have had nothing but good things to say about him. He was a presence here and he will be missed Goodbye, friend.

Coz was one of the nicest, gentlest, most polite people I've encountered online. Never a harsh word for anyone, always providing good information and good humor. I am truly saddened by this news, but I take slight compensation in the knowledge that his suffering is now at an end, and that he is a better place. This forum won't be the same without Kev. God speed.

Man. I'm speechless as well. Very sad news. We all come together here with a common interest, cartoons, and we make some great internet friends, but other than his views and opinions, I didn't know him at all. Very sad. My thoughts go out to his family and friends. Dave how did you know he passed on?

He might be a member of Coz's website or possibly a pagan and is a member of the site that first found out the tragic news.

This is our unmet friend, Kev, the Cosmic Fool. As some of us know, Coz was pagan. These are his words and thoughts on death: it is my belief that at death, though our bodies may return to the earth, our spirits face a future that while not certain in direction is certainly not an end. Does this mean we should not grieve the passing of a loved one? Of course not but while we mourn our loss we should also celebrate their past life and continued journey. Remember the past; celebrate the journey. Safe Passage, friend.

Here is a bit about Coz from one of his friends in the UK:
As you will have seen from the memorial thread on the Valley he was a very well loved man. I had only known him for two years we were members of several forums and both of us moderate on UKPagan. he was very active in the interfaith community as well as the pagan scene on the internet believing that there should be an understanding and recognition of all faith being valid in a sense. I'm not exagerating when I say that his wisdom, knowledge, and humour will be missed for many years by hundreds of people all over the world :( If you would like to see the memorial thread mentioned, it is here: http://thevalley.ukpagan.com/....php?showtopic=13514

Even though that Pagan site has a lot of info about this, Pentacle Magazine got the news first about Coz's "eternity entrance".

Firstly I would like to thank Dave for giving me the opportunity to tell you a little more about Cosmic Fool. The following is an obituary I have written to be published in a couple of Pagan periodicals including Pagan Dawn and Pentacle Magazine It is rather long but I felt that it would be nice for members here to see a side of Kev that they may not have done before.
When talking about Kev (Cosmic_Fool, also known as Cos or Coz ) it is difficult to know where to start really, I never knew him away from the internet but considered him friend, well more than a friend really, to so many of us he was family. He was someone I respected greatly for his knowledge and wisdom, he had a way of dealing with situations and difficulties with a gentle approach letting his humour ease tensions and diffuse any problems. Although that really only shows that he was an excellent and well respected Moderator and on other sites Administrator. Cos had battled several illnesses in recent years, it was a constant up hill struggle for him but he always did it with a smile despite the severe pain and extreme discomfort he was obviously in. Most recently he had problems with reoccurring cellulitis which at one point went systemic, though he managed to fight it off even without antibiotics for a while. He had many problems with ulcers and infections in his legs making it incredibly painful and difficult to walk, especially when combined with severe asthma. At the time of writing this the cause of death has not been announced. So many of us in the on line community knew Cos for his wisdom, his wonderful poetry which appeared in several pagan publications and diaries, but also in sci-fi publications too. But to really know Cos I suggest reading his website, Fools Paradox which can be found at http://Foolsparadox.co.uk The site shows his deep love of Sci-fi, he had watched Dr Who all his life, and loved it from the start to the point that one of his wishes was to have the theme tune played at his funeral. The site also shows his spiritual side describing his path and his beliefs. There are also many of his poems on the site too. He really was a multi talented bloke with depths to him that still remain hidden in a way, though through his works we get a good glimpse of the man he was. Unfortunately the site will not last forever but his friends in the pagan community are looking at ways of creating a permanent memorial for him. Cos was a font of information on so many subjects, and to be honest I really only ever scratched the surface of the man which saddens me as I know I will not get the chance now until I have passed on myself, but I know he will be there to greet me with a warm smile and no doubt a few quips. Cos lived at home with his mum, his father having died 14 years previously. His home was filled with all sorts of memorabilia from tv sci-fi shows in particular Dr Who, to the point that trying to get to some cupboards was a long arduous task. He had a great respect for all faiths and worked hard within the interfaith community on-line trying to bridge gaps and build a common respect, which looking at the sheer volume of tributes to him he was definitely successful with. There are Pagans, Heathens, Christians, Jews, Muslims and many many others all over the world mourning his loss. To be honest though, I think the deepest felt loss will be in the pagan community as he was such a vibrant and well respected person he had a presence about him which could be easily felt over the internet. To get an idea of just how much he meant to so many of us, a couple of people have been collating all the memorial posts together to be able to give to his mum who is now totally alone, having no other family: at the last known count there were 179 pages from forums and message boards. This number is increasing all the time and does not include all the Blog posts which are being collected by someone else. I would expect that there are well over two hundred pages of condolences for his mum to read through and to take comfort from. The sheer amount of respect and outpourings of emotion for Kev is incredible, it really is, I am sure he would be very very proud of the fact he impacted so much on so many peoples lives, and also I think he would be totally embarrassed by it too. Knowing him from on-line it has been a joy to hear some of the stories about him from his mother. Kev also had a collection of cuddly toys, something that although unknown to us, does not come as a surprise. He loved to bake cakes, learning as a young boy with his mother, and he loved dressing up for work fundraising events, even borrowing his mothers’ tights and lipstick for the panto dame, a photo familiar to many of us on-line. His mother recalls Kev wearing a snowman outfit, complete with woolly hat and scarf on a boiling hot summer day. He loved to make people smile, make people laugh, he was always happy, forever playing the fool. And now he is the Cosmic Fool, for somewhere in the skies above us there is a star named Cosmic Fool, named after him as a present for his 40th birthday. I do not know it’s exact location but I feel I do not need to. For me Coz will live on in all those stars that shine so brightly, he will live on for me in my heart and soul. I greatly mourn his passing but I also celebrate the life of the great man that was Kev, our very own Cosmic Fool. To look up into the sky to see the stars twinkling is to know he is still with us, still shining his brilliance and joy into our lives. To read some of the tributes for him on the main pagan website he was a member and Moderator of visit http://thevalley.ukpagan.com/....php?showtopic=13514 also have a look at the following Pagan & Christian Moot thread too. http://paganandchristianmoot.co.uk/...or...read.php?t=4375 Cos lived by 8 virtues and from my view lived by them successfully * To honour Nature. * To honour my family and friends. * To honour my gods and any other allied spirits. * To honour my path. * To honour my word and deeds. * To honour the words and deeds of others. * To honour freedom and the law. * To honour truth over falsehood. Having read through all the above, it somehow seems to miss who he was in a way, yes it gives an insight into him and what he was like but it comes no where near the man and just how special he really was... to be taken so young at only 42 was a great shock to us all. Very sadly missed and mourned by many, though his life and his successes are celebrated and will last in our memories of him and also in his writings. A few lines from one of his poems, The Green Temple, seems to be appropriately fitting at this time, "I offer up a prayer of gratitude; Both for my life and for this privilege. A flash of electric blue zips downstream: A kingfisher to carry my prayer? My time is up. I move on knowing that I can not return. This temple will be gone, Such a moment is a blessing, One rarely granted but joyfully received. One day I may find the Green Temple again." Rest well Cos, May you find the Green Temple in the Summerlands

Kevin, you were a great guy to discuss with. We didn't talk much but this Forum will remember you always. I don't have really much to say, when we say less it sometimes means more. It's sad because I just saw some of my older relatives that are on the virge of death, it's heartbraking to watch them.

The intention was for all the sites to get the news at about the same time. There wasn't that much in it. When I got the phone call I wasn't near a computer so my wife got in contact with those she knew to get in contact with and as soon as I got to a computer I let others know. Since then the news has spread far and wide. It really doesn't matter who heard first though. So, I've just got off the phone to Kevins mother. The coroner found that Kevin had suffered another Deep Vein thrombosis that had resulted in a clot travelling to his lung that led to Kevins death. BB Mike

"Even though that Pagan site has a lot of info about this, Pentacle Magazine got the news first about Coz's "eternity entrance"." As an Administrator of 'that' Pagan site ;) Pentacle Magazine site clocks time is wrong, something Coz would have fun with time travel jokes about lol Mike (cern) had strict instructions to let me know first as a good friend of Coz But that's beside the point "In memory of his passing, and as a future memorial to him on this board, the Dr. Who Econ will now be called with the code "coz" instead of who. Try it- and remember our good friend and contributor." I was so touched by this when you posted it on UKPagan Dave, that really is fabulous, both as Kev adored Dr Who but also had fun with coding, it's amazing to hear. His mum won't understand the coding bit, but she understands the tribute part. She has been so overwhelmed and touched by the outpourings of tributes to her son. She is alone and this has brought great comfort to her I have rung her several times now and I am overwhelmed by how strong and brave she is, now I know where Kev got those attributes from Mike has already reported on the cause of Kev's death, he had battled so many illnesses, so more extreme than we could ever comprehend but he always kept on smiling, happy and bright. You may all be very pleased to hear that the Dr Who theme tune will be played at Kev's funeral :D I can imagine hundreds of people around the world with the theme tune in their heads at the time of the funeral! Many of us who cannot travel there will be lighting candles, a symbol of light in the darkness, a reflection of the brilliance of Kev's life, a memorial to our loved ones that seems to found in all beliefs, religions and spiritualities, I would like to hope that some of you here will join us in this too The time of the funeral has yet to be definately confirmed although I will let you know, or Mike will if he beats me to it lol. What Tim never mentioned in his tribute, is that Kev made exceedingly good cakes, only the other week I was tucking into a delicious tealoaf that Kev had baked for me and posted to me! You can't beat home made cooking Kev was thoughtful, kind, caring, wonderful, special - the outpourings of tributes to his memory have taken us all by amazement. Regarding donations in his memory his mum has specified his wishes in this matter. I was incredibly touched by them, and will let you know (Dave) asap when arrangements have been finalised. Unfortunately the server update by our host company has taken far longer than intended and UKP has been down all day [unsure] It has been such a pleasure to hear from so many people about Coz, we knew he was loved, but we never quite realised how universally he was admired, loved and respected. It has made this terrible time a little easier to bear. For Coz who made the world a better place to live in, weatherwitch

(I realise that some of this information has already been posted by Mike but I am copying over our announcement post so some information will cross over.) The coroners report for Kev was released yesterday. Unfortunately as UKPagan was down because of the expected server down time we were unable to announce the news on there before now. Kev died of a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) embolism that went to his lungs. If I understand correctly it started in his leg, building up over several days, but because of his terrible problems with his legs (anyone who's seen the pictures of them will understand why) he would not have been able to feel or be aware of the normal warning symptoms. By the time he was aware it was too late However he did pass away swiftly and his mother said that when she later sat with him in the hospital he looked peaceful. Kev's funeral will take place on Monday, November 20th, leaving the house at 9:30am with the service beginning at 10:00am. After the service Kev will be cremated elsewhere. On Tuesday morning at 9.45am his ashes will be scattered where his fathers are according to Kev's wishes. I would hope that those of us who cannot be there to say goodbye will be lighting their candles at these times to light his way. Coz specified in his will & wishes about wanting the Dr Who theme tune played at his funeral. Kev's mum told me this but believed it couldn't be done. Thanks to Mike (Cern) it will be done. Our beloved Coz will go out at his funeral with the Dr Who theme tune being played. That's a fabulous thought, isn't it? Hundreds of us at the same time all lighting our candles for Kev, and all with the Dr Who theme tune playing in our heads. Wonderful We have been approached by various people about wishing to make a donation in Coz's memory. Having spoken with Kev's mother we are incredibly touched that she wanted any donations to go towards the running of UK Pagan. Kev it seemed had wanted to go to our Scarborough Hotel Moot fundraiser but was unable to attend. This was to be his way of raising funds. We are exceptionally grateful to Kev and his mum for this and we are also actively seeking ways in which to permanently commemorate his life. We're currently looking into hosting a "Fool's Corner" for all of Kev's writings and prose, planting a tree with the woodland trust in his memory, and sending flowers to his mother. So at 10am on Monday November 20th, please light a candle for Kev and his mum, and hear that Dr Who theme tune playing in your head. Or sing it out loud, he'd like that Donations in the memory of Coz can be made here http://thevalley.ukpagan.com/...s&page=donations please state 'For Coz' when sending. With thanks To the memory of Coz, weatherwitch on behalf of UK Pagan
