Hanna-Barbera Cartoons on VHS You Must Register Before You Can Post

Hi,

Is it true that when Hanna-Barbera's cartoons were released on VHS through Worldvision Home Video from 1986-1987 and then by Hanna-Barbera Home Video from 1987-1992, that there were at least two 30-minute shows per volume?

For example:
Scooby and Scrappy-Doo, Volume 3 (Worldvision Home Video #V1042; H-B Home Video #HB1042), released in 1986 (despite the 1985 copyright info on the Worldvision issue) contains the season 1 (1979-80) episodes "The Demon of the Dugout" (aired 11/3/79) and "The Hairy Scare of the Devil Bear" (released 11/10/79). But when the first episode ends, there are no opening or closing credits. One opening title is seen (which opens the first episode) and one closing title is seen (at the close of the last episode).
Episodes in this video:
The Demon of the Dugout (original open and title; no credits)
The Hairy Scare of the Devil Bear (no open; original title and credits)

Jonny Quest (Worldvision Home Video #V1083; H-B Home Video #HB1083)
Episodes in this video:
Mystery of the Lizard Men (original open and title; no credits)
The Curse of the Anubis (no open; original title and credits)

Worldvision Home Video was distributor of H-B shows on VHS from 1986-1987 and then H-B Home Video formed in 1987. H-B Home Video started out as a Worldvision-distributed imprint until 1989, at which point Great American Broadcasting (the then owner of both H-B and Worldvision) was going through severe financial turmoil, which forced them to sell off Worldvision to famed TV mogul Aaron Spelling (1923-2006) and then the next year H-B was also sold off by GAB, to Ted Turner.

If anyone can think of any websites out there with a complete list as to what H-B cartoons were released on Worldvision Home Video and H-B Home Video and what episodes from these shows are available on the VHS tapes issued by these two companies, I would appreciate it.

Thank you,

Ben (ScoobyDoo1976)

Yes, that is how Worldvision did it. Generally, they would release two half-hour episodes on a tape, cut together as if they were one show, with one opening title at the beginning, and the closing at the end. Years and years and years ago, I used to have a couple of fliers from Worldvision Home Video which listed some of their early releases, circa 1981-1983, but have no idea where those would be now. Off the top of my head, I do remember that some of the earliest ones they released were Atom Ant, Secret Squirrel, Top Cat, Jack And The Beanstalk, Casper And The Angels, Scooby And Scrappy-Doo, and Scooby Goes Hollywood. I did rent the Atom Ant and Secret Squirrel tapes at one point, and was shocked to see the original openings and closings of both shows included. There was even a silent title screen for Atom Ant, which I assume would have been used for an announcer's voice-over ("Atom Ant, brought to you by...") in the 1960s. This was also when I noticed that the closing credit overlays were the exact same as later used on the syndicated Banana Splits And Friends Show, even down to the word "animation" misspelled as "aimation." I was somewhat disappointed to find that the Atom Ant tape just included eight "Atom Ant" shorts, and the Secret Squirrel tape just included eight "Secret Squirrel" shorts, with none of the other segments of the shows represented -- and the end title cards were left off all the cartoons. Later, Worldvision did release individual tapes for the other segments in the shows. I was very excited when they released a single volume of The Banana Splits And Friends in the summer of 1983, but the way they compiled that tape was bizarre, to say the least. Now at that time, I didn't know the one-hour versions of the original shows existed anywhere, in any archive (now I know at least the Season 1 shows did). Based on what I know now -- that tape was basically a cut-down version of the first two one-hour Banana Splits Adventure Hour shows, but with the opening and closing titles replaced -- the opening was replaced with the short cut-down syndicated Banana Splits And Friends Show intro, and the closing was replaced with the closing credits from The Adventures Of Gulliver, as shown on The Banana Splits And Friends Show -- that is, the Gulliver credits playing over the Banana Splits theme song. As for the rest of the show, the segments play out in the correct original order as originally seen in the one-hour NBC shows, but with a lot of stuff edited out (two shows are whittled down to about 53 minutes total). The Danger Island segments were dropped altogether, but the tape still included two segments that didn't make the syndicated half-hour shows.

So to summarize, if a show was a half-hour, with a storyline taking up the entire episode, then Worldvision would compile two of them into one double-length episode.

If a show consisted of short cartoons, Worldvision would put together a bunch of them back to back, featuring the title character only.

If a show was The Banana Splits, it would be cut to pieces.

A very few -- nine -- of Hanna-Barbera's Abbott & Costello cartoons were released on a 1986 VHS tape by a Toronto company, Interglobal Video Promotions Ltd., which somehow got the rights to the series. This wasn't a 30-minute show, but a collection of 156 short (five-minute) cartoons that originally aired in syndication.

If you want to buy it, a couple of copies are available at Amazon.com for nearly $70 each. You read correctly. Shocked

Yes, I have a copy. No, it is not for sale at any price. I'm a baaaaaaad boy! Tongue
