Happy Earth Day You Must Register Before You Can Post

I think it was on Sunday or Monday but...

This is about cartoons like "Captain Planet" and other 'Save the World' moral cartoons. But prior to 1990, were there any?

Re: Happy Earth Day [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

Earth Day is today, actually. April 22.

But to answer your question, the only other "eco-friendly" series that comes to mind right now is H-B's Yogi's Gang (premiered on ABC September 8,1973), the one where Yogi and the other H-B funny animal toons from the 50-60s were traveling the world in a flying ark righting the wrongs of such enemies of the environment (Mr. Smog, Lotta Litter, Mr. Sloppy, Mr. Waste) or the enemies of pro-social behavior (Mr. Vandal, The Envy Bros., Peter D. Cheater, Gossipy, the Sheik of Selfishness).

"The Smurfs" could be quite eco-friendly since they lived in the forest and all.

"It's Arbor Day, Charlie Brown" was made in the 1970s.

The kids planted trees on the baseball diamond and it helped defeat Peppermint Patty's team for a change.

There was also the animated version of "The Lorax" from 1972 based on Dr.Seuss' classic story.

Re: Happy Earth Day [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

The 1971 Toei film Gojira Tai Hedora -- better-known as Godzilla vs. Hedora and Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster -- was live-action, but contained several animated sequences.

Animated clips depicted Hedora (the Smog Monster) feeding on a tanker and inhaling poisonous fumes from a factory, and big factories fouling the Earth. This was the only use of animation in a Godzilla feature film.

In fact, its narrator, the late Eddie Albert, was an active environmentalist. He helped launch the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970 -- his 64th birthday.

And don't forget "The Smokey The Bear Show," which was actually the first eco-themed animated series.
