We all complained about WB's releases. Wait til' you see what Sony does to future DVD releases. How dare they put logo's in the bottom corner of these classic jems. It's plagiarizing at it's finest!

I hope they include some of the Modern Madcaps -- these didn't star any famous characters like Casper or Little Lulu, but they had their charm. Some of the later Noveltoons also had "miscellaneous" characters. It's been ages since I saw them in syndication. Will we ever see Cape Kidnaveral again?

Sony already mutilated the Bullwinkle / Rocky and friends collection with the logo on the bottom corner. Considering the opening theme music was different and voiced over with new animation , the annoying logo was the icing on the cake.

Hi all. I was wondering what's up with this release. It says the total amount of time 200 minutes but if you blow the picture of the box up it says 14 hours. Which is right? Anyone know?

It would be nice if the cartoons contained in this set are fully-restored, with the original Paramount opening and closing titles intact; but I doubt it will happen. Paramount sold off the rights to all of their "Noveltoons" produced between 1944 and 1956(?) to Harvey Films, a subsidiary of the Harvey Comic Book concern. Harvey Comics was created as a way of marketing established characters from the Noveltoons series: Buzzy the Crow, Katnip, Little Audrey, Casper, Wendy the Witch, et al. The early Harvey Comics were drawn by staffers from the Famous Studios, which produced the theatrical cartoons. When Harvey Films acquired the Paramount backlog of Noveltoons, they re-filmed the opening and closing credits (a subtle variation of the Paramount "jack-in-the-box" animated opening and closing titles, which repalced the paramount emblem with the Harvey Comics logo). Back in the early 1990's I was watching some Casper the Friendly Ghost and Herman and Katnip cartoons on a local independent station; and, to my horror, discovered that the original music (scored by Famous Studios' house composer, Winston Sharples) and dialog tracks had been replaced with some really insipid-sounding new music and voices(!) These were in English, mind you... they hadn't simply been dubbed into a foreign language for overseas distribution. I couldn't fathom who had done this or why! Since then, to the best of my knowledge, none of these cartoons have been shown on broadcast TV.

Not all of the Harveytoons were theatrical releases. The New Casper Cartoon Show mixed old cartoons with 25 low-budget, made-for-TV cartoons produced by Famous Studios. HarveyToons distributed the show in syndication in 1962-63. Some of these made-for-TV toons have been released on DVD as part of Sony Wonder "Casper" compilations.

Tried today to dig up some more 411 on this release, but Sony Wonder & Sony.com both are being tight liped about the whole thing... I guess we'll just have to wait until their ready to gives us more intel or until the DVD is released this October 5th.

Side A, side B? Are these double sided DVD's? That would be interesting since they pretty much discarded them when single sided dual layering came into play?

I note that each of the DVD sides is divided up into individually-numbered "shows" which contain 3 cartoons and one cartoon clip each. To what "shows" are Jon Cooke referring? Are these individual episodes of the syndicated New Casper Cartoon Show? Also, why are some titles available only as clips? I'm assuming because these individual cartoons originally contained scenes that would be considered too violent or too racist today? For example, Winner by a Hare originally had an end-gag where Moe Hare shoots himself in the head; and then his ghost transforms the winner's wreath that was thrown to him into a headstone which reads "The End". That gag has been missing from all TV prints but I recently found a complete print of this cartoon online with the original opening and closing titles and music. I provided a link to that print in a previous post in the "Other Studios" section. I'm tempted to purchase this set, but I'm put off by the fact that this is not a "complete" set. A number of cartoons are included only in a highly-truncated form. I also hate the fact that the original titles are missing.

There really was a "Harvey Cartoon Show," with Jerry Beck as an advisor. Each show really did run with three complete cartoons and a clip. The cartoons ran with Harvey credits substituted on the title cards, as well as foreshortened theme music. The animation, etc. credits no longer appeared on the titles. I don't know why some cartoons were only shown as clips, but note that many of these were "spot gag" cartoons. I bought the set anyway; it's inexpensive, and Jon Cooke has the titles of the cartoons. Since Harvey has the rights to many of these, you'll see many cartoons that are unavailable anywhere else. Land of the Lost Watches comes to mind.

I'm hoping that maybe VCI or Thunderbean Animation will put together a compilation of some of the rarer PD Noveltoons and that Jerry Beck might spearhead the project; just as he did with the "Somewhere in Dreamland" Fleischer Color Classics DVD set. It would be great to have a disc that includes the complete, unedited prints of Winner By a Hare and No Ifs, Ands, or Butts, among others. There have to be a small number of foreign prints still languishing in the UK, Europe or Japan that Harvey Films and NTA didn't get their hands on. Most cartoons studios distributed dubbed versions of their cartoons to foreign countries during the 30's, 40's (not during the war years, obviously) and 50's. If those could be located and they were in decent condition, then maybe an alternate DVD compilation could be produced (providing a supplement to the current Harveytoons set).

I noticed that nearly all of the "shows" have one brief clip from a different cartoon (one per show) which just happens to contain material that might be considered un-PC today. Also, I noticed that same cartoons are described as having their "original soundtracks". Does this mean that the other cartoons on the set do not have the original soundtracks?! Maybe it was these cartoons that I saw on that cable station. What were they thinking when they re-recorded the audio tracks on these? I was browsing over at Jerry Beck's cartoon research and he has a number of DVD's for sale (on his "Garage Sale" page) that contain many of the Famous Studios' "Noveltoons" (including those featuring Little Lulu) and "Screen Songs". They are apparently all from 16mm rental prints, which means that they are probably UM&A/NTA editions. The discs sell for $25.00 USD apiece; although anyone purchasing large quantities of discs may receive a discount.

Dear Eminovitz, "Modern Madcaps"movie cartoons were first seen on The ABC TV Cartoon show"Cartoonies!" hosted by the late Paul Winchell and his puppet pals: "Jerry Mahoney" &"Knucklehead Smiff". "Cartoonies!"was seen Saturday mornings on ABC TV during the 1963/1964 season. The show only lasted one season on ABC TV and it was replaced by"The New Casper Cartoon Show!"..which remained on ABC TV's Saturday morning scheduale for the next few years. 4CK.
