Herman Brix/Bruce Bennett dead at 100

Brix died Saturday. A record-breaking shot-putter, he appeared in a number of movies as Bruce Bennett. Unlike Johnny Weissmuller and the other movie Tarzans, he played Tarzan the way that his creator, Edgar Rice Burroughs, had written him, as the multilingual, Oxford-educated member of the English nobility, Lord Greystoke. Appearances included The New Adventures of Tarzan (1935) and Tarzan and the Green Goddess (1938). Born in Tacoma, Washington in 1906, Brix adopted the screen name Bruce Bennett and did supporting roles in such films as Mildred Pierce (1945), playing Joan Crawford's well-meaning first husband, and Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), in which he played a down-on-his-luck American who joins Humphrey Bogart in a doomed quest for gold. Sports writer Grantland Rice once called him "America's greatest athlete." Brix took silver in shotput at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. Brix lost to Weissmuller for Tarzan the Ape Man (1932) after injuring a shoulder. He moved on to TV in the 1950s, guest-starring everywhere. Brix went into semi-retirement in the 1960s, going into business, first for a slot machine company and later as a real estate investor. He cooperated in a 2001 memoir, Please Don't Call Me Tarzan.
