How can I sell my animation to Nickelodeon or CN?
Hello everyone. I am a professional artist. I have 87 illustrated books under my belt but I know nothing about animation. I really intrigued and would really wish to put myself into it. I would really much appreciate your help and information in particular on this topic: "How can I sell, through which distributor, and if Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon for example I guess they buy only Flash movies?" Sorry if this are dummy question but I need some answers to them. Thank you all for awesome forum!!!! Alex

Pitching any type of show to a big studio is very tricky. Anyone who is or has been in the industry can tell you that. If you would like, send me a private e-mail, and I will tell you some experiences of mine and other artist. Never go pitching your stuff blindly, talk to a lawyer first.

Sorry if this are dummy question but I need some answers to them. No need to be ashamed, friend. It's better to ask these things first as opposed to learning what not to do the hard way. I can tell you a couple of things that you should definitely do: 1. COPYRIGHT EVERYTHING! Getting a copyright is easy. Just fill out a form for a copyright, send it in, pay the necessary fee and you're done. It is definitely a good idea to copyright your work before you send it off to anyone. Someone could easily steal your ideas and claim them as their own. Without a copyright, it would just be your word against theirs in a court of law. 2. Never go to anyone (Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, whomever) without first talking to a lawyer. 3. Never mail off your original drafts. If you want to send off a sample of your work, make copies of them and send them off. Studios tend to not return the samples, even if they reject them and you don't want to have to re-write or re-draw them all over again. Also, keeping the originals is a good idea for proof that it's truly yours if that ever comes under question.

Just remember that posting your ideas on the web without first obtaining a copyright for them is like leaving your car unlocked with the keys still in the ignition: a HUGE mistake and an open invitation for thieves.

Is it going to be animated or live-action? Because that decision will determine which network will pick it up. Remember to keep your options open, because Nickelodeon is run by control freaks, and CN doesn't do animation anymore, so if they both reject it, you'll be screwed.
