Hoyt Curtin's Musical Styles
We all know the legendary Hoyt S. Curtin (1922-2000) was a genius for his stock of music he'd performed for Hanna-Barbera cartoons from the 1960s to the 1980s. What were his musical styles? Early in his career at H-B he would perform with assorted jazz musicians (such as a brass band for the '60s Jonny Quest title theme) as well as adding orchestral strings (the 1962 version of The Jetsons title theme), and he would move to the synthesizer for such title themes as diverse as Yogi's Gang (1973), Devlin, Valley of the Dinosaurs (both 1974), The Great Grape Ape Show (1975), The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour (1976), C. B. Bears (1977) and of course, the music to the 1980-81 Flintstones primetime specials. What synthesizer did he use to compose the music to the 1980-81 Flintstones primetimers? My guess is the Moog MiniMoog, which had been a hot property among progressive rock musicians since the early 1970s. I know for certain he did use a synthesizer to compose the 1979 H-B "Swirling Star" logo signature (my guess is the sound there is "polyphonic"). ~Ben
