A Humbug, A Spelling Bee, and a Gelatious Giant.

Forty years ago today, the animated movie version of "The Phantom Tollbooth" was released to theaters. Thanks to the creative genius of Chuck Jones, this movie, like the book, was about the adventures of Milo, a boy who went through the Phantom Toolbooth, and entered a land where he encountered a wide variety of strange creatures. It began in live action, and then became animated. Milo was played by Butch Patrick, post "Munsters" and pre-"Lidsville." Seems he was destined to play roles like these.

A great movie to boot! Ya know, CJ himself is in it, as the mailman or delivery man or something, right before Milo (Butch Patrick) opens the ginormous package that is the Tollbooth.

AHEM.....let's not forget the contributions of co-director Abe Levitow, who had to have designed many of the supporting characters.

I might be in the minority here, but I watched the film once at a retro-cinema on a double-bill with "The 5000 fingers of Dr. T" and had trouble sitting through it, it was so boring...

The Tollbooth wasn't delivered by anybody. It appeared out of nowhere while Milo was talking to his friend Ralph on the phone. I always liked the movie, especially the song sequences. I wish they had done more with the book, though. Would have been kind of interesting to see how they did the half-child Milo encounters at one point. Think it would be cool if done as CGI with real actors, instead of real actors converted to cartoon.

I believe Chuck Jones appears in the title sequence as the passenger Milo sits next to on the trolly car.
