If Disney made a new Fantasia,... You Must Register Before You Can Post

What cartoon segments would you like to see?

I would have from the 1940 version "The Sorcerr's Apprentace", "Pastoral Symphony", and "Dance of the Hours"
From the 2000 version, I would use "Pomp and Circumstance" though I don't like Elgar.
And I would have six new segments. I would like to see Goofy in one with "1812 Overture" as the song.

Re: If Disney made a new Fantasia,... [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

I personally would not like to see a new Fantasia, just because Disney did such a crappy job. IMHO, on Fantasia 2000.

Things I did not like about Fantasia 2000:

1. The "Pines of Rome" segment... just what the hell do flying whales have to do with pine trees, anyway?!

2. There were too many references/comparisons to the original Fantasia; plus there were too many well-known personalities (Bette Midler, Steve Martin, et al) introducing the individual segments. I personally thought that this just confused matters and cluttered things up. Less is more. They should have just stuck to one well-known commentator (I would have picked David Ogden Stiers, myself) throughout the proceedings.

3. I didn't like Disney's choice of Music Director/Orchestra: in the past I've enjoyed James Levine's opera performances with the Metropolitan Opera; but I don't think much of him in his performances of the standard orchestral repertoire. I personally was against his being made Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is a great orchestra (still one of the nation's top five), but I would have picked Michael Tilson Thomas with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra (of which he is Principal Conductor), simply because he has a better camera presence. He did a great job in Chuck Jones' TV special, Bugs and Daffy's Carnival of the Animals (soon to be released as a bonus feature in LTGC5), and he was host of a musical appreciation series for kids that aired on PBS in the 1970's. He also has recently made a critically-acclaimed series of music performance DVD's with the SFSO.

My personal feeling is that, more often than not, you really can't improve upon a classic movie.

I am hoping, however, that Disney DVD will see fit to release a Platinum Edition of the original Fantasia (the original "Roadshow" version) and include as a bonus feature the deleted "Clair de Lune" segment.

Often Imitated, never dupilicated. That's what they say. Is the Cleveland Orchestra up in the top-5? (Because one of the many Cleveland Jokes is that both Cleveland and the Titanic sunk, only Cleveland had the better orchestra. And if you see the above the avatar, that's what they named it.)

ShockedPlease! PERISH THE THOUGHT!! Let's prevent the current Disney people from doing another FANTASIA till they've at least taken a few hints from Bruno Bozzetto & HIS animators......IMO: ALLEGRO NON TROPPO, even though it's a parody, is really the true sequel to the original FANTASIA, proving once & for all that imitation's the sincerest form of flattery.

It's inexplicable why the late-90s Disney crew couldn't do something as roaringly funny as the Dvorak "Slavonic Dance #7" sequence, or as heartwrenching as the Sibelius "Valse Triste" segment.

And Disney sure had gall to do its own Stravinsky "Infernal Dance" after Bozzetto's gang did it to perfection.

I believe that James Earl Jones was actually the host of the entire proceedings, although I'm sure Angela Lansbury (who had starred in Bedknobs and Broomsticks and had recently voiced Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast) was also featured as a guest commentator.

In reply to MC about the Cleveland Orchestra; yes it is still one of the top 5 (the others are Chicago, Boston, New York and Philadelphia) in the U.S. I forget who the Music Director is over there now; is it still Christoph von Dohnanyi?

You know what I can't figure out... why Disney never sought to do a musical collaboration with Leonard Bernstein in the 1950's and 60's, when he was at his artistic peak with the NY Philharmonic. His was a household name at that time, as his "Young People's Concerts" and "Omnibus" television progams which aired on CBS were extremely popular.

Of course, during the 1960's, Disney was only just beginning to recoup his losses on the original Fantasia, so maybe he didn't want to risk making another classical music film.

The only parody I know from 'Fantasia' would be Looney Tune's 'Corny Concerto'. (I think that's the right title.) Elmer Fudd's the orchestral director suffering from a few 'Wardrobe Malfunctions' and one segment was by Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig; the other was 'The Blue Danube' featuring a young Daffy Duck.

Whether or not the black duck in "A Corny Concerto" is in fact Daffy has been the subject of much debate here on the forum. Opinions differ.

But this is the Disney folder, not the Warner Bros. folder. Let's not stray too far from the subject, 'kay?

Re: If Disney made a new Fantasia,... [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

Actually, ALLEGRO NON TROPPO's been a LONG, longtime favorite of animation buffs around the world: a cult classic. It's been on DVD several years now, and I relish watching it each and every time. My only complaint about the film is that the live-action sequences were filmed in black and white, though this only amplifies the stunning color schemes Bozzetto's designers achieved. In the live-action bits, we see a bullheaded, Mussolini-type conductor, who leads an orchestra full of little old ladies (!!!!), and a quiet artist who sits by the sidelines offering his "visual interpretations" for us all--he's the character we come to sympathize with through the course of the picture.

You can always see individual portions on YouTube, like the ones I mentioned above:

The Dvorak "Slavonic Dance" segment:

....and the Sibelius "Valse triste" segment:

Wait a minute--Disney first INTENDED Fantasia to be an ongoing project, with some old peices, and some new ones.

my opinion is that Fantasia 200 was one of the few sequals that was really up to snuff. No, I didn't think it was a good as the first one, all things considered, but it was still a great movie and lived up to the high standards of the earlier Disney.

Don't get me wrong. THere's plenty of stuff Disney is doing in recent nyears I can't stand--such as the fact that the Disney hannel is 99.9 percent teen comedies and nothing else. They haven't made any decent wildlife films or adventure movies for years to my knowledge. Why is this?

Right on, Sleestakgod. Fantasia was made in the early years of the Disney studios, as were the classic fairy tale features. And it was intended to be updated every ten or twenty years, to keep the vision and expressionism alive and vibrant at Disney.

But as peterhale once pointed out, during Disney's early years, they were daring and imaginative, hoping to pioneer animation into uncharted territories.

However, with success and seniority came timidity and restraint. Today's Walt Disney Company has imploded into safe and secure productions, leaving the pioneering to newcomers like Pixar and Blue Sky, et alii.

It's uncertain at best whether Disney will make another Fantasia reprise. Disney management is focused squarely on profitability, not on creativity. It's up to the Newbies to explore the Wild Cartoon Yonder.

Re: If Disney made a new Fantasia,... [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

The beginning of the Ren and Stimpy episode "Nurse Stimpy" had a Fantasia reference. The first movement of Beethoven's Sixth Symphony, Allegro ma non troppo, played when Stimpy woke up to a beautiful day. And on "Space Madness," the History Eraser Button scene had "Night on Bald Mountain" playing. And various scenes had either "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" or "Dance of the Reed Flutes" heard in the background, such as when Old Man Hunger posed as the Nerve-Ending Fairy on "Ren's Toothache."

My grand-daughter and I have completely enjoyed Fantasia 2000. I enjoyed it because I didn't compare it to the original. I just watched it as a new movie. I particularly like Rhapsody In Blue and The Steadfast Tin Soldier.

I loved the Donald Duck and Daisy segment, aboard Noah's ark. That was the high spot
for me (and I'm glad they included "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" from the original film). A
very worthy sequel (in my opinion). I also liked the segment based on Al Hirschfeld's
marvelous caricatures. He is one of my all-time favorite artists.

It can never hold a candle to the original. And also that was the time when Michael Eisner was into making sequels.

So, you've basically already judged the film, without actually seeing it. Always a great idea. I would think that of most people, animation fans especially, should be the ones that are more open minded.

FYI, the person who ended up bringing F2K to the screen was Roy Disney, not Eisner.

I think Disney recently released a Platinum Edition of the original 1940 film, if I'm not mistaken. I'm not sure if this also includes "Fantasia 2000".

In addition, a number of different people have uploaded HD-quality excerpts from the film online.
