Was Jana of the Jungle suppose to be a female version of George of the Jungle?

No. George of the Jungle was Tarzan parody that preceded Jana of the Jungle by several years. GothJ was a comedy, while Jana was an adventure/drama. Furthermore, the 2 animated series were produced by different studios; George was produced by Jay Ward studios (who also produced Rocky & Bullwinkle) and debuted in 1967, while Jana was produced by Hanna-Barbera and ran for a single season in 1978.

No. George of the Jungle was Tarzan parody that preceded Jana of the Jungle by several years. GothJ was a comedy, while Jana was an adventure/drama. Furthermore, the 2 animated series were produced by different studios; George was produced by Jay Ward studios (who also produced Rocky & Bullwinkle) and debuted in 1967, while Jana was produced by Hanna-Barbera and ran for a single season in 1978. Filmation's version of "Tarzan, Lord of The Jungle" was still getting good ratings on CBS around that time. NBC wanted a female version in the same serious storytelling manner to compete.
