June Bugs 1997 list
|
|
|
Thanks to one of the members at the GAC Forum, there is a compiled list of the first June Bugs. So I thought I'd post this for future references. June Bugs started Friday, June 13th at 8:00 PM (eastern time). It started with the premiere of "Blooper Bunny". This short also aired Saturday and Sunday at the same time. Other than "Blooper Bunny" this is the order the cartoons went in. Turner didn't have acess to 48 hours worth of Bugs Bunny cartoons, so after the last one on this list, Cartoon Network started from the beginning again. I only watched this the entire first round, so if there are any to add, then I would need to know. The first time through, they showed "Crazy Cruise", unedited twice in a row. After the first round, they replaced the repeat with "Bugs Bunny Gets the Boid". Also, the first time through, they aired about 7/8 of "The Great Piggy Bank Robbery", probably to fill up time until they were to find "Duck Amuck", which came after this. The only edited cartoons were "Fresh Hare," "Tortoise Wins by a Hare," "Hare Ribbin'" "The Big Snooze", "Frigid Hare", "Ballot Box Bunny", "Bugs Bonnets", and "Southern Fried Rabbit". The cartoons were shown in this order: "Hare-um, Scare-um" "A Wild Hare" "Elmer's Candid Camera" (dubbed) "The Heckling Hare" "Tortoise Beats Hare" "Wabbit Twouble" (dubbed) "Crazy Cruise" "Bugs Bunny Gets the Boid" "Case of the Missing Hare" (dubbed) "Fresh Hare" (dubbed) "Hold the Lion, Please" (dubbed) "The Hare-Brained Hypnotist" "The Wabbit Who Came to Supper" "The Wacky Wabbit" "A Corny Concerto" "Falling Hare" (dubbed) "Jack Wabbit and the Beanstalk" (dubbed) "Super Rabbit" "Wackiki Wabbit" "Tortoise Wins By a Hare" (dubbed) "Buckaroo Bugs" (dubbed) "Bugs Bunny and the Three Bears" (dubbed) "Hare Force" (dubbed) "Hare Ribbin'" (dubbed) "Little Red Riding Rabbit" "The Old Grey Hare" "Stage Door Cartoon" "What's Cookin', Doc?" (dubbed) "Hare Conditioned" (dubbed) "Hare Tonic" (dubbed) "Hare Trigger (dubbed) "The Unruly Hare" "Acrobatty Bunny" (dubbed) "Baseball Bugs" "The Big Snooze" "Hair-Raising Hare" (dubbed) "Hare Remover" "Racketeer Rabbit" (dubbed) "Rhapsody Rabbit" "A Hare Grows in Manhattan" (dubbed) "Easter Yeggs" (dubbed) "Rabbit Transit" (dubbed) "Slick Hare" "The Goofy Gophers" "Buccaneer Bunny" (dubbed) "Bugs Bunny Rides Again" (dubbed) "Gorilla My Dreams" "Haredevil Hare" (dubbed) "Hot Cross Bunny" "Rabbit Punch" (dubbed) "Two Gophers from Texas" (dubbed) "A-Lad-in His Lamp" "Frigid Hare" "Knights Must Fall" "Rebel Rabbit" "What's Up, Doc?" "Bunker Hill Bunny" "The Rabbit of Seville" "Rabbit Every Monday" "Ballot Box Bunny" "Big Top Bunny" "Rabbit Fire" "Rabbit's Kin" "Duck Amuck" "Bully For Bugs" "Southern Fried Rabbit" "Yankee Doodle Bugs" "Hyde and Hare" "Beanstalk Bunny" "Barbary Coast Bunny" "A Star is Bored" "Bugs Bonnets" "Wideo Wabbit" "Bedevilled Rabbit" "Bugsy and Mugsy" "Rabbit Romeo" "Hare-Way to the Stars" "Now Hare This" "Backwoods Bunny" "Wild and Woolly Hare" "A Witch's Tangled Hare" "Rabbit's Feat" "From Hare to Heir" "Lighter Than Hare" "Horse Hare" "Prince Varmint" "Bill of Hare" "The Unmentionables" "The Iceman Ducketh" "Dr. Devil and Mr. Hare" "False Hare" "The Odor-able Kitty"

Good one, bmode. We should definitely leave this up as a constant reminder to CN and/or Boomerang of what they SHOULD be airing on their network.

Too bad it's too late for the fact that it's June Bugs. Stupid whacked up CN. When will they go back to tradition?

As much as I love the traditional style of cartoons, two dimensional characters can be rather frustrating sometimes. Exhibit A:

Stupid whacked up CN. When will they go back to tradition? As soon as they think that a profit can be made off of "tradition". As much as we may have preferred CN as the Hanna-Barbera Reruns, Looney Tunes and MGM Shorts Channel, the raw truth is that they weren't making a lot of money with that format. CN launched their "International Toon-In" on Thanksgiving weekend of '94 or '95, and they got trounced by Nickelodeon's "Non-Stop Nicktoons Weekend". CN wants to appeal to kids, and kids would rather watch new cartoons made specifically for their era rather than old school toons from another generation. It's all about the $$$$$$$$$$ baby. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

I'm pretty sure "June Bugs" Pre-dates 1997. I remember it being on TBSuperstation in 1990, during Bugs' 50th.

It probably does, but the afore mentioned list is for Cartoon Network/Boomerang.

Anyone remember a character called Jasper from a series called "Puppetoons" by Paramount? Like "Crazy Cruise", Bugs had a tiny cameo in one of these... I wonder if Paramount had to get permission and if CN own this cartoon or not?

The cartoon was Jasper Goes Hunting (1944); actually, the series was Madcap Models. Permission to borrow Bugs was required... and received.

The poster this database uses (no title card must've been available) says "Puppetoons"... that wasn't the series' name, then? anyway, thanks for clearing that up, Em...

According to Wikipedia the films were released as "Puppetoons" by Paramount, but renamed "Madcap Models" after they were acquired by UM&M for TV syndication in the 50s; however other sites suggest that "Madcap Models" was Pal's original name for the series.

Actually, there was no June Bugs in 2006. Really? Wow, that's another nail in the coffin for Boomerang.

It's sad to learn they canceled June Bugs. I used to watch it the last few years till they canceled it. Cartoon Network has lost their mind cancelling Looney Tunes from Cartoon Network in the very first place. To tell you all the truth Cartoon Network probally canceled it because most kids today only find violence funny. Kids WB! has just made a mockery of the classic Looney Tunes with Loonatics. I refuse to ever watch that garbage. What really killed Looney Tunes to the point of being pulled from cartoon Network is they wanted to put their own animation on their network. I just wish they'd bring the cartoons back on television. Putting them on DVDs just isn't good enough. All it tells me is its the final farewell for Looney Tunes forever. We need to take action right now! We can't afford to wait much longer.

Well... now that the head of CN has resigned in disgrace after that botched guerilla-marketing ploy earlier this month for the upcoming Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie, maybe the network might reconsider changing its programming and bringing back the classic WB cartoons.

We can hope that the new head of CN may consider bringing back LT/MM in some capacity. But with all things LT currently airing on Boomerang, I wouldn't bet danger money on that happening. Sadly, I feel that CN is going to continue being Crap Network as long as it remains a commercial channel that exists mainly to make a profit.

More or less. The real reason, as always, boils down to $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. To understand the reasons behind CN's current downward spiral, you must take into account that CN is before anything else, a commercial network. Their primary goal is profit, pure and simple. When Cartoon Network began in the early 90's, it was basically a nostalgia network for cartoon afficionados like us, but they also wanted to appeal to kids (a much sought-after demographic), and that's where it broke down in the wasteland: since CN didn't offer any new or original programming, they were constantly getting trounced in the ratings by Nickelodeon and their ilk. The reason Cartoon Network mutated into CN in the first place is because they weren't making a lot of money as the Hanna-Barbera Reruns/LT/MM/MGM Toons Channel. And a commercial network can't survive if it doesn't turn a profit. This is why we're getting live-action movies and no cartoons beyond CN's own in-house productions on the channel now; it's all an attempt to save money and rake in the almighty advertising dollar. Nostalgia's good, but seldom does it pay the bills. I too would like to see the classic WB shorts return to CN in some capacity (or at least see them start airing a higher quality of new shows that what they have on now), but I honestly don't see that happening as long as accountants and admen continue to run the network. It looks as though for now, we'll just have to settle for Boomerang and the LT DVDs.

June Bugs had a telephone contest, and the prize, I remeber fondly, is a trip to Australia. I probably didn't call, who won anyways?

I think TCM should play June Bugs. Uncut, Uncensored, and even the cartoons that TV never dared to put on until now! Or maybe Adult Swim since they're the only ones who gives a damn now!

Oh snap, I just saw this post now, sorry my bad. I'm not sure why I did those two in red? Maybe because this is the first time the CN/Boomerang aired those two cartoon shorts?

I'm wondering if we should simply close out this thread, which was started 13 years ago, and start up a new one on the same topic... Then again, this one barely has one page to it... maybe we should just re-name it to "June Bugs on CN", so it doesn't sound so ancient. Any thoughts, Bruce, David, Mark? Just asking...
