BUGS BUNNY: Mutiny on the Bunny (1950), Bushy Hare (1950), Hare We Go (1951), Foxy by Proxy (1952), Hare Trimmed (1953), Lumber Jack-Rabbit (1954), Napoleon Bunny-Part (1956), Bedevilled Rabbit (1957), Apes of Wrath (1959), From Hare to Heir (1960), Lighter than Hare (1960), The Million Hare (1963), Mad as a Mars Hare (1963), Dr. Devil and Mr. Hare (1964) and False Hare (1964). DAFFY DUCK: Tick Tock Tuckered (1944), Nasty Quacks (1945), Daffy Dilly (1948), Wise Quackers (1949), The Prize Pest (1951), Design for Leaving (1954), Stork Naked (1955), This Is a Life? (1955), Dime to Retire (1955), Ducking the Devil (1957), People Are Bunny (1959), Person to Bunny (1960), Daffy’s Inn Trouble (1961), The Iceman Ducketh (1964) and Suppressed Duck (1965). Yeah, quite a few cartoons from the '60's here, and quite mediocre ones too. IMO The Iceman Ducketh is one of the worst cartoons ever made. WB seems to be trying to get the release of those type of cartoons "out of the way". Oh well, there are some great never-been-released-on-dvd cartoons here as well. I ordered my copies from Amazon. They'll arrive in late April or early May sometime. I can't wait.

The Daffy selection is better than Bugs'. Daffy Dilly is a fun cartoon. The interrogation of the butler is a great bit of dialogue. I love how Daffy simulates pouring wine when he gets to the line about elderberry wine. Dodsworth http://yowpyowp.blogspot.com

The Daffy selection is better than Bugs'. I see your point although I, too, agree that The Iceman Ducketh should have never been made, let alone released. But it will be nice to have a copy of Tick Tock Tuckered and Dime To Retire ("a little traveling music, please..."). Still no Quackodile Tears, though. What's the title of the Friz Freleng toon where Bugs encounters Dr. Jekyll ("Hunh. You'd think they never saw a rabbit before"). If that hasn't been released yet, it's a crime.

I'm really glad you started this thread; I've been meaning to start one just like this for some time, but kept forgetting to do it. GAC and other cartoon forums have been actively discussing this topic for the past 4 months now, and I was kind of bummed that we weren't on board as well... Would you mind if I change the title of this thread to "The Official Warner Bros. "Superstars" DVD's Talkback Thread" (or something along those lines)? That way, I think, we'll be able to generate even more comments here. How many of you, BTW, have already pre-ordered these on Amazon? (I'm just curious, that's all...) Like others here have already said, the Daffy disc looks to be the more interesting of the two. I'm hoping sales of this will be positive enough to warrant some future DVD's in the series from WBHE.

What's the title of the Friz Freleng toon where Bugs encounters Dr. Jekyll...if that hasn't been released yet, it's a crime. I agree that The Iceman Ducketh is a weak cartoon (Phil Munroe directed it, didn't he?)... but I have to say that I always LOL whenever I see that "Pepsodent" gag with the bucket of water! Hyde and Hare has been previously released on DVD as a bonus feature on the DVD of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from WBHE. There are two versions of the film on the double-sided DVD: First, the 1932(?) version with Frederic March that was directed by Rouben Mammoulian; and, second, the 1945(?) version with Spencer Tracy and Ingrid Bergman directed by Victor Fleming. I'm curious about how Time-Warner got the video rights to the earlier Frederic March version. That one was originally produced and released by Paramount Pictures. I forget why, but I remember reading that the film got shelved indefinitely after its initial release. The transformation scene of Dr. Jekyll changing into Mr. Hyde (during which the laboratory spins around) was apparently so awe-inspiring that it was copied, shot-for-shot, by Walt Disney in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (during the transformation scene with the Wicked Queen.) Other scenes from that film, such as the "first-person" camera shots of Mr. Hyde as he enters a pub, were lifted verbatim by Jerry Lewis for his own adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic, The Nutty Professor (1963). Anyway, wouldn't it have been MCA who acquired the television (and later, video) distribution rights to the film? The film would have been included in the TV package of pre-1949 Paramount feature films that are now owned by Universal; unless it somehow ended up being acquired by a.a.p (along with all the Popeye cartoons) instead.

No problem zavkram!! Hyde and Hare is on Vol. 2 I believe (too lazy to dig them out) I know it's on one of them. There are still several classics that haven't yet gotten the proper reissue treatment (A Wild Hare, I'm talking to you)...hopefully WB does this right.

Actually, a nice restored version of A Wild Hare was released on the Acadamy Awards Animation Collection. There's some interlacing issues but it still looks pretty good. It's also a bonus feature on the dvd for the James Cagney movie Torrid Zone. But, yeah, it would have been nice to see it included in one of those gold collections.

Good to know, but not all of us are film buffs, I'm not to spend x amount on a collection for one cartoon. I still think they're saving that for something special. And we do have two watchable prints in BB Superstar and the 50th special.

Good to know, but not all of us are film buffs, I'm not to spend x amount on a collection for one cartoon. The Academy Awards collection is worth having not just for a good-looking, original version of A Wild Hare, but also for Tex Avery's Blitz Wolf and Chuck Jones's (actually, Maurice Noble's) The Dot and the Line. I purchased the set myself because it contained about 7 cartoons that I did not already own. I also managed to buy it when it was on sale on Amazon, so I didn't spend too much. Still, I hear where you're coming from...

Of course all of you know by now that the release of these DVD's has been pushed back until August. Jerry Beck has hinted at another two DVD's in the series, to be released before the end of 2010.

...I hope, I say I hope one of them's a Foggy disc. Yep! I got confirmation that one of the forthcoming discs will indeed be devoted to Foghorn Leghorn. There is also supposed to be a 2-disc compilation, "Bugs Bunny Through the Years", coming out sometime next year... no word on an exact release date or contents, though... WBHE is also supposed to come out with a similar 2-disc set devoted to Tom and Jerry. Like the Bugs set, Disc 1 will contain "essential" T&J cartoons, while Disc 2 features T&J cartoons through the years (which means there will probably be some Deitch-directed ones and some double-dipping from the Chuck Jones T&J set).

I didn't listen to the podcast, but recently Jerry Beck was a guest on "Stu's Show" and was talking about forthcoming titles in the "All-Stars" series from WBHE. Apparently the Bugs and Daffy sets are being held up because of restoration issues (some cartoons were restored, while others weren't)... In addition, WBHE has put an indefinite freeze on the restoration and release of any of the cartoons from before 1952. There's no budget for it. The focus now will be on reissuing cartoons made and released from 1953 onward, because of the current switch to wide-screen TV's and Blu-Ray. This includes cartoons that were actually produced using a wide-screen process and those that weren't (but had full-frames laid out in such a way that they could be cropped in theaters and on TV). This is indeed bad news, because the pre-1948 LT's and MM's are in bad shape (reportedly, at about the age of 60 they start deteriorating) and desperately in need of restoration. This also means that the other two "All-Stars" DVD sets will be comprised of a lot of crap like "Banty Raids"

One would think the logical thing would be to start with the oldest cartoons?

There's still a chance that other cartoons from before 1952 will be released; they just may not be restored, that's all. I've heard that there are some unreleased cartoons that were restored before the budget cuts. So who knows, maybe there's enough of those to fill at least 1-2 DVD's.

One would think the logical thing would be to start with the oldest cartoons? Which would mean the black-and-white Boskos. There's more of a market for Foghorn Leghorn. So that's what they'll go with. F. Fox http://yowpyowp.blogspot.com

I agree of course, but that's what was great about the Golden Collections, one could pick and choose. I'm not really a fan of the Bosko cartoons, but I respect them for their historical importance. If I want to sit and laugh, I'll watch Foggy.

I think it's safe to say that the four-disc, Golden Collection format (so far as WBHE is concerned) has gone the way of the Do-Do. In this recession it is no longer economically-feasible. I also think that all we can expect now from WBHE are these single-disc compilations until the global economy recovers. I'm hoping that "The High and the Flighty" will be included on the Foghorn DVD, if for some reason it gets left off the Daffy compilation.

Time will tell... According to Jerry Beck, Warner Bros. is trying to get the Looney Tunes back on TV (either on CN, Nickelodeon, or TV Land, to name a few). Apparently further restoration and video release of the older material is contingent on whether or not the cartoons get back on TV. Again, it is believed that there are many unreleased cartoons that had already been restored at the time of the cut-off. There has been a great deal of second-guessing and grousing on other cartoon forums as to what will be coming out and how badly it will sell. To these people I say, chill out already! Wait until the DVD's come out before formulating an opinion, either good or bad...
