Living medicine bottles. (Bottles)
|
|

Sorry if this is a repost or a rehashed old question. I did a search, and I read the database of merrie melodies and I can't seem to find it. It isn't really that obscure, an old man falls asleep in his house and an evil poison bottle with a skull head shrinks him and he witnesses all the medicine and elixir bottles dancing around. I am curious as to what its title is and who did it, it has Freleng and MM all over it but I may be wrong. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum, jeroboam! (Does your name have anything to do with huge wine bottles?) An easy one to answer. This is Bottles (Happy Harmonies; MGM, 1936). A busy old pharmacist has a dream in which the bottles in his apothecary come to life. He goes through test tubes and sees virtually every color imaginable. He wakes to find that he has been reduced to pint size, and that his bottles have turned into people. The producers of Happy Harmonies, Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising, had been with Warner Bros. a few years earlier, when they made the first Merrie Melodies.

Wow thank you! Oh and yeah the name is partly due to the wine, but also it is a nick name a friend called me due to my name being Jeremy and we were learning about the Israelite king of the same name.

Just for the heck of it, jeroboam: A Jeroboam (your name) holds the equivalent of four bottles. A Rehoboam (named after Jeroboam's fierce rival) equals six bottles. A Methuselah (for the old guy in the Bible who lived for 969 years): eight bottles. A Salamanazar (for the warrior king of Abyssinia): 12 bottles. A Balthazar (the king of Babylonia): 16 bottles. A Nebuchadnezzar (Balthazar's grandpa): 20 bottles. The biggest wine bottle ever in standard production, this holds about 15 liters. Hope you have a strong table!

According to historian Graham Webb (the author of the EXCELLENT tome dealing with 1900-1976 animations for theatrricals, right down to voices, production and sound systems!), THE ANIMATED FILM ENCYCLOPEDIA (which, btw is NOT to be confused in ANY wya with Jeff Lenburg's book), a very young Frank Nelson (1911-1986), about 24 at the time (May 9,1911-Sepptember 12,1986), was one of the voices--he's the guy who goes "YEssss" on Jack Benny, Lucille Ball, Sanford and Son and Flintstone programs as wlelas other characterizations elsewhere. Elmore Vincent is doing the kindly old man.

Great pics, Bmode! I haven't seen that cartoon in a long while... the colors are simply gorgeous! I've always wondered... just what is that thing in the beaker that tries to cut the shrunken old man in two with a pair of scissors? That image always creeped me out when I was a kid!

Anyone know where this can be purchased? Or if it can be viewed online?

I absolutely love this cartoon. I somehow have it on an old VHS tape and I still watch it occasionally. I didn't see it until I was an adult...somehow missed it entirely throughout my childhood!

It seemed that the Baby Bottles stole the show.
