"Madagascar 3" takes first at overseas box office

"Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" was wanted over the weekend in Europe and many other countries abroad, taking first place overseas. In spite of competition from the Euro Cup, the 3D animated threequel brought in $75.5 million from 28 countries. That's in addition to first place in North America with $60.4 million. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the latest installment in the cartoon franchise debuted this past week at No. 1 in most of its opening countries. Its biggest wins were in Russia ($16.4 million), Brazil ($11 million) and China ($10.4 million). It also opened in first place in France. Attendance figures were released in only five European countries. There, football games led attendance to drop 30% to 50%. Prometheus in 3D was in second place abroad, collecting $39.2 million in 50 countries in its second week of release for a total of over $141 million.
