Maw & Paw on tape or dvd You Must Register Before You Can Post

Do any of you know if the 4 Maw & Paw cartoons (Walter Lantz Studios) are available on vhs or dvd? They are my mother's favorite and I have never been able to find them. Dan Jeffers, Independence, MO

It does not seem likely that these cartoons will be released on DVD, and to my knowledge, they have not been on VHS either. This may be due to the fact that the characters were designed after Percy Killbride and Marjorie Main, who played Ma and Pa Kettle in the successful film series.

Well, first of all, there would not be any rights issues involved since Universal still owns the rights to the characters played by Kilbride and Main. In fact, Universal (which also owns the rights to the Walter Lantz film library) recently released a multi-DVD set of all of the Ma and Pa comedies as part of their "Franchise Collection" series.

The Ma and Pa Kettle series of film comedies were produced and distributed by Universal during the 1950's and the characters themselves were spun-off from the 1949 film version of The Egg and I (the book of which had been purchased by Universal as well). Moreover, the animated title sequence to the original film was produced by the Walter Lantz Studio and it was probably the success of that sequence, along with the popularity of the live-action series, which no doubt prompted Lantz to do an animated version.

I had heard that at least one of the "Maw and Paw" cartoons (directed by Paul J. Smith) will be included in the forthcoming 2nd Volume of the Woody Woodpecker and Friends Classic Cartoon Collection that is due out next month. Perhaps that has changed for some reason...

I've seen 16mm prints for sale occasionally on eBay.
