OK, now I am both very happy and very peeved at the same time. Due to Tiny Toon Adventures: How I Spent My (Summer) Vacation having sold well (you should get it, even if you weren't particularly fond of the series; it's that good) Warner Bros. has announced the release of long-awaited Volume 3 of the series. Now this is awesome news, also because it may influence them to finally release the last volume of Animaniacs. The problem is that, due to some inane reason, they seem to be leaving out the episode "Elephant Issues" because of the controversy the "One Beer" segment caused when it was aired (and never re-aired). This is incredibly cowardly as "One Beer" did not encourage kids drinking alcohol; quite the opposite (the "Now leaving sanity" sign is excellent) in fact. Considering even Disney released the Goofy cartoon where he tries to quit smoking but don't manage to do so, this is pure idiocy on WB's part. Is it really that controversial to show cartoon characters do things that are bad for them, to set an example? Anvils and dynamite is fine, but one measly bottle of beer (which shouldn't be enough to make the three of them that drunk, especially since they shared it) is enough to get a cartoon de-facto banned? I cry for humanity.

The beer episode is so over the top--it really can't be taken seriously. I showed it to a friend once--he viewed it the same way.
The ending even shows Buster, Plucky and Hampton getting out of their angel costumes remarking: "Do you think the kids got the message?" "Yeah, drinking's uncool." "I hope we get to do a funny episode next week."

My understanding of the One Beer cartoon is that Warner Brothers executives insisted on including some kind of children's service message in the Tiny Toons series. Something along the lines of "The More You Know" and "Knowing Is Half The Battle" and such, basically an aesop-heavy cartoon.
Of course, the directors and animators of Tiny Toons were displeased by this meddling, so they deliberately took the aesop of underage drinking to haywire hyperbolic levels. Thus, One Beer is the ham-fisted, preach-o-rific parody that it is.
Once this cartoon aired, WB management clearly saw that they were being limned. Being pompous suits, the execs refused to fund further seasons of Tiny Toons, and have effectively buried One Beer. The Bosses do not take kindly to being pranked, and have laid the Smack down.

Speaking of which, when and if Disney finally releases the third season of Darkwing Duck on DVD, I wouldn't be surprised if "Hot Spells" is ommited. You know, the one with the Devil trying to steal Darkwing's soul.
Seriously, none of these things are going to harm children in the long run. They'll be perfectly fine.
