Notable underwear gags/scenes in cartoons
|
|
|
The aim of this thread is to discuss and/or link to notable underwear gags or scenes in cartoons. I'll start off with one of my favorites: In Disney's "Prince and the Pauper", Captain Pete has his pants slashed, making them drop down and revealing his heart-printed boxer shorts. Anyone else want to contribute?

There's a rare female example from the Josie and the Pussy Cats series, produced by Hanna-Barbera studios under lease from Archie Comics, that aired in 1970. From the episode The Midas Mix-Up, the villain has created a "microbe mist" that can dissolve gold, and plans to export it worldwide disguised as aerosol cologne. Alexandra Cabot takes a can of the stuff and liberally mists herself with it. The cloud dissolves her gold lamé ski suit, revealing her red woolen longjohns underneath. Alexandra, embarrassed, quickly seizes a guard's uniform from a nearby hook to preserve her modesty.

Some "interesting" examples of men in women's underwear: Popeye The Sailor (Betty Boop; Fleischer Studios, 1933) In this, the first Popeye cartoon, the sailor sings his familiar theme song. While doing so, he momentarily exposes a corset! Hello, How Am I? (Popeye the Sailor; Fleischer Studios, 1939) Popeye is surprised to meet himself! However, "himself" is actually Wimpy in disguise for better mooching. It's revealed that Wimpy used a corset to pull his stomach in as part of his Popeye disguise. Pals (The Little King; Van Beuren Studios, 1933) The Little King is feeling low on Christmas Eve, so he joins a pair of homeless bums in admiring the toys and holiday decorations in a department store window. Quoting reviewer Del Walker: "As the two hoboes remove their raggedy clothes, one is briefly shown to be wearing a brassiere (cross-dressing?)." The Woody Woodpecker Polka (Woody Woodpecker; Walter Lantz Productions, 1951) "Borrowing" some women's underwear (among other items) from a clothesline, Woody dresses up as a femme fatale and vamps Wally Walrus into letting him enter a barn dance. The Wacky Wabbit (Merrie Melodies; Warner Bros., 1942) Elmer Fudd wears a corset... or is a girdle?... to keep his gut in. Elmer: "Don't waugh, I bet pwenty of you men wear one a these!"

The 2002 Simpsons episode Helter Shelter had the family becoming the star of an 1895 House-style reality show. Marge gets laced into a corset and initially is satisfied at its effects on her figure, before realizing that the stays had made her feet swell up to twice their normal size.

In Beauty and the Beast, during the "Gaston" song, Lefou pants a man--basically he pulls down a man's pants revealing his underwear. In "Fresh Hare" Bugs tears off Elmer's uniform, accidently ripping off his boxer shorts. We also see Elmer--with a girdle and boxers before Bugs kicks him.

You see Red Hot Ryder's underwear in Buckaroo Bugs. Bugs uses a magnet to pull off the metal thus pulling off his belt.

Can we count undershirts? Because if we can...there's a Donald Duck cartoon called "Dumbell of the Yukon" where Donald would jump-out of a fur coat and he's seen in a tank-top, hat, and gloves. (Some people wear a tank-top as underclothes.) And speaking of tank-tops...Rocko from "Rocko's Modern Life" would be seen in a tank-top...especially when he goes to bed.

In the "Arthur" episode "Arthur's Underwear" Binky Barnes rips his pants while celebrating having correctly answered a math problem in front of the class, thus revealing his underwear. Arthur laughs about it, but then has nightmares of going to school in nothing but his underwear. Later while in the cafeteria, Arthur's own pants rip, revealing his tighty-whities. Binky, instead of laughing, uses a couple of lunch trays to cover Arthur as they walk down to the school nurse, who stitches Arthur's pants back up.

I can't remember the name of the cartoon, but it was a Chuck Jones Tom & Jerry short. I think Tom and Jerry shaved each other reveling their underclothes.

Yeah, that's it. Another Tom & Jerry one is Bad Day At Cat Rock. Tom's fur gets pulled off and he puts it back on like a pair of long-johns In Weasel Stop, both Foggy and the weasel end up in their underwear after going through a hay machine.

A couple of underwear gags in Darkwing Duck... In "Calm A Chameleon", Gosalyn proves she's not an impostor by mentioning that Darkwing has boxer shorts with teeny hearts on them. In "Disguise The Limit", Darkwing exposes Negaduck by pulling his costume off and we see Negaduck wearing underwear with skulls on it.

In "Doug's Big News" there's the infamous scene in which Roger has Doug read off a paper that says "In other news, Mr. Bone wears pink underwear." Near the end of that episode, the other students get a gift for Mr. Bone. Roger is tricked into giving it to Mr.Bone. What is it? Pink underwear. "Drip-Along Daffy" has Daffy accidently take his pants off when drawing his pistols out. Also in Aladdin--during "One Jump" Aladdin removes the belt of one of the guards revealing his pink underwear with white polkadots.

In "A Corny Concerto" Elmer has problems with his tuxedo, and during the intro to "The Bwue Danube", he rips off his shirt front (the part that he had the most problems with), causing his pants to fall and revealing red-and-yellow striped undies with lacy trim on the legs. Also in "Corny", during the Blue Danube segment, Mama Swan realizes her babies are missing, and searches frantically for them. At one point she lifts up her feathers like a dress, revealing pink bloomers.

The first Betty Boop cartoon to "accidentally" show Betty's undies: Barnacle Bill (1930). The last one: Betty Boop's Trial (1934). After this, the Hays Office Production Code influenced Betty Boop cartoons, and she was no longer as sexualized.

From Turner Features Animation's Cats Don't Dance, released to theaters in 1997, features Danny the cat singing "Danny's Arrival Song." During a musical bridge sequence, Danny springs to the top of a trolley car; it's unclear whether Danny was too cheap to pay the fare or too excited to ride inside the vehicle. Danny's kinetic dance routines result in his outfit getting snagged on part of the overhead mechanism. Danny actually falls out of his clothes onto the roof of the trolley car, displaying his star-spangled winkies for all to see. This is only momentary, however, as Danny quickly realizes his plight, and physically leaps back into his clothes to continue dancing happily.
And to illustrate my previous post, here's Alexandra Cabot applying the gold dissolving mist, and its effect. She said, "Eek!"
