I remember watching this cartoon on teletoon when I was younger. It took place in a world where people had these devices that they used to control animals (dinosaurs, giant gorillas, etc.) or have the animals inside them or something. The main character had black hair and he had this giant gorilla that was his. I've been looking everywhere and stumbled upon this forum. Hope someone can identify this!

The wizard Merklynn presents the best knights of the planet Prysmos with a challenge. The good knights of New Varlek and the evil knights of Darkstorm step forward to accept his challenge. Each succeed using their various skills. Once a knight succeeds at a challenge, the knight is rewarded with a magical staff and armor. Each of the staffs and armor reflect the personality and skill of the knight. The armor chest plate has a magical holographic image that enables them to transform into their totem animal. Lion for courage, Cheetah for speed, mollusk for sliminess, lizard for guile and sticky fingers, gorilla for brute strength etc. On the staff, there's an insignia of power that gives the owner a magical skill.

It's "Kong: The Animated Series"
I too remember this show, it;s about a boy who befriends King Kong's Son (or descendant). and has a device to put Kong in him. His friend got a tingling or itch in his toes before bad things happened if memory serves. I'll check for it on wiki and put up the link for you.
