Plans for new MGM cartoon sets?
|
|
|
According to this live chat posted on Home Theatre Forums (thanks to PF9 for providing it over at GAC), Warner Home Video is apparently planning to come out with remastered MGM cartoons. Will there finally be a stand-alone Tex Avery set? We can only hope!

It would be nice for there to be a stand-alone Tex Avery set, but I think it will be a mix. WHV only mentioned MGM cartoons in general and that they are looking at all of them. That would make since though, to have Avery mixed with Harman/Ising and so forth. As long as they look good and are unedited, I'm happy. And it's about time

I hope so. All uncut, unedited, and uncensored (I could make a comment, but...)

Has anyone heard any more on this? I'd really love to see all the Happy Harmonies and Tex's stuff cleaned up and made available.

Has anyone heard any more on this? I'd really love to see all the Happy Harmonies and Tex's stuff cleaned up and made available. The sad thing, UJ, is there's probably more of a market for The Flintstones Kids or Pound Puppies or some such dreck than anything by Harman and Ising. If there were a Tex set, I'd probably buy it, which kind of shows my philosophy about the cartoons I like. Disney cartoons of the mid-late 30s seem to be saying "Look how well I'm drawn!" Harman-Ising cartoons of that period seem to be saying "We can draw as well as Disney!" Avery's cartoons of the 40s are saying "You think that last gag was funny? Watch this!" Well, I guess I should just throw my hands in the air and buy "The Flintstones Kids" then. Yep, THAT's the attitude. Yessir I'll go clear shelf space for the "Pacman & Friends", "Q-Bert", "Kissyfur" and "GummiBear" deluxe editions too. If they won't give me what I want I'll just gouge my eyes out and drive spikes through my eardrums and learn to eat up the slop! Sorry, I can't take the pessimistic attitude. Too many things that I never thought would see the light of day have made it to DVD. Besides, I post to the forum to discuss what I like, not to whine about the stuff I don't.

I have a sudden urge to watch my bootleg copy of the Director's Cut of Heaven's Gate... If you start now, you'll be finished by Labour Day. Maybe. In the meantime, I await word to the answer to the subject query. But I think Unca Jeffy is unfortunately right. There's a lot of crap on DVD. And I think now that a lot of stuff from the 30s through 60s that appealed to cartoon fans of that era is out there, companies will move on and try to sell more of the dreck that kids of the 80s watched and have some kind of nostalgia about. Rainbow Brite anyone? Blecchh. Dodsworth http://yowpyowp.blogspot.com

Isn't the 1 thing, besides maybe Song of the South, that we thought would never see on DVD...on DVD? Droopy's Good Deed uncut? I'm not the historian on the matter that, say, Jerry Beck is but I'm convinced that the "missing" scene(s) from that cartoon ate fictitious. They just happened to end up in folklore, kind of like the Casper cartoon where he is a boy who dies and becomes a ghost...or like the roach eggs in that woman's lip who'd are at Taco Bell the week before I don't know if anyone noticed but I hadn't been around much, until recently, for about a year. I was not able spend money or even time reading about extracurricular favorites of mine (dang real life and responsibilities!!!). When I regained some spare time recently, I could not believe everything that made it to DVD. I mean...Droopy's Good Deed people! There are also 2 volumes of Walter Lantz cartoons out that feature all characters There's a stand alone OSWALD SET FROM DISNEY And didn't I read that 1 of the upcoming single disk releases from WHV will be a disk about previously censored war cartoons? Or was it on the last Golden Collection? Anyway, you get the point. Also, there are hidden gems all over the place on DVD such as The Dot and the Line and The Grinch. Additionally, a new format (Blu-ray) is on the rise and that will trigger consideration for everything in existence to be released on it, whether it has been released before or not.
