Hi. Does anyone know of a UK video/DVD release which contains the cartoon "Porky's Hired Hand" as I'm really keen to see this and I can't find it online.

I have the colorized version captured off the Boomerang channel. Hope this helps ease your pain, as we wait for the rest of beloved cartoons to come out. Why not release two volumes a year WB's?

Thanks a million for putting this up. From what I remember, the version that I saw before was the sepia version

I've never heard of Warner Bros. releasing any of the black and white Looney Tunes in Sepia-Tone, so this must have been done by whoever issued the cartoon on video. I know that MGM had produced some of their cartoons in Sepia-Tone, most notably a few in the short-lived "Captain and the Kids" series.

The sepia version that I think I saw was the off of a Cartoons R Fun tape that someone gave me although I only saw the last few minutes as the beginning was taped over. If memory serves me correctly the tape was called "Egghead-Hamateur Night". I don't definatley know if it was sepia but it definatley wasn't colour and I don't remember it being B+W. Plus I think a few other Porky Pig Cartoons on those tapes were sepia toned(Porky's midnight Matinee for instance).

Black and white Looney Tunes that showed up in Cartoons R Fun tapes (which I have) and some similar public-domain compilations were definitely sepia-toned, probably to give the false impression that they were "color"! If you can't find a UK DVD release, Gordonfan, may I suggest investing in a multi-region DVD player and ordering a North American release? It isn't worth the purchase for just one DVD, but if you're searching for many discs with only North American distribution, it could be worth your while.

Hi. I'm not too concerned about whether I get it on tape or DVD(although I would be interested to know of a DVD that may have it. I do sometimes wonder why this cartoon wasn't included on as many releases as other Porky Pig shots(Ali Baba Bound for instance). Other than CRF(where I believe this cartoon was only featured once), does anyone know of any other public domain collections that might contain this cartoon- in particular ones that were made in the UK.

Woohoo. I've finally got it. The sepia toned version off of the Hamateur Night tape.

Is this really sepia you have, or a faded Two Strip Technicolor? Actually Porky's Hired Hand was 1940, so you would have the 3 Strip Technicolor which came out around 1935?

If this was officially a Looney Tune, circa 1940 (and according to Beck, Maltin, the IMDb and BCDB, it was), then it would have originally been in Black & White. The first color (3-strip Technicolor or otherwise) Looney Tune (The Hep Cat) wasn't released until October 3, 1942. All Black & White production (with the exception of the Private Snafu series) came to a halt the following year; which made the Columbia studio the last remaining producer (through 1946) of Black & White cartoons. BTW, I love the facial expressions (as well as the modeling in some shots) on Gregory Grunt... Did anyone else notice the reference to background artist Peter Alvarado, in that insert shot of Gregory's letter of reference?
