Question about "Solid Serenade" You Must Register Before You Can Post

I had trouble sleeping last night, and in the wee hours of the morning I happened to turn on CN and see "Solid Serenade," one of my all-time fave Tom and Jerry 'toons. I know technically Tom and Jerry aren't supposed to talk, but it is SO much fun to watch Tom slap that bass and belt out "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby?" (Not to mention it gives me a chuckle to think how many English teachers soil themselves on hearing the title of that song. Cool) Anyway, my question is, would anyone happen to know who did the singing on that particular tune? I tried looking it up here but it didn't say. Just wondering.

According to the Wikipedia, the person who sang in Solid Serenade was...... Fred Quimby. But I don't know how accurate that is.

"Is You Is..." was originally a 1943 hit for Louis Jordan.

You think this gave grammar teachers headaches? What about "It Ain't Necessarily So"?!

I would have thought 'not very'...

All the accounts I've read portray Quimby as a 'stuffed shirt' executive - the closest he got to the actual production-work of MGM cartoons was being present in all the publicity shots!

He ran the studio, approved story ideas and OK'd the final films, but had no involvement in (or, some say, appreciation of) the creative side of cartoon filmmaking.

Also, no discernable sense of humour.

Whilst it is just possible that such a man might be a closet amateur jazz singer, it does seem an unexpected talent.

I read on the internet that he is supposed to have done the all the other voice effects in Solid Serenade as well - which seems even less likely!

I think it might be Bill Hanna who sings for Tom - he usually supplied Tom's grunts and howls in the Tom & Jerry films.

All though it's possible that Quimby could have pulled a cartoon surprise, I agree that it's more likely that Bill Hanna sang "Is You Is...."
