boris, balls and a question too

I remember 2 cartoon series from my younger days, both were flat animation as opposed to models, The first was about a cossack or barbarian called Boris and I think it might have been called Boris the Brave (or Bold or maybe just Boris). I seem to recall that at some point he had a wife and baby but other than it looked to be brightly coloured (we only had a black and white TV in those days) and looked foreign (i guess it was of Czech or Polish origin as the animation resembled that on the Mole cartoon series and they were both about 5 mins per episode) I know nothing. The other show was called Sam and the Magic Ball. It was about a little boy called Sam who lived in an old shop and he had a magic ball (gee I wonder where they got the title for this series) and all I can remember about it was that the stories were largley narated and that when the ball did magic it looked like someone in the animation department had overdosed on spirograph. The series was made apparantly by Cosgrove Hall (before they were called that) and although I find it mentioned on many sites I wonder if anyone had any more info or knew of a site which actually went into some detail. Boris was a traditional cel type animation I recall, however the Magic Ball was I think made with limited animation. Now a question for you out there that I know the answer to. Does anyone out there know who the gentleman in red is that I use as an avatar here? 5 team points if you do and a bonus 5 points if you ID his little green companion. Personally I think he is deserving of more recognition and at least a DVD release. Cheers Kev

Well done, you win 10 team points. I just wish they'd get around to releasing the little guy on DVD. I mean I appreciate Dangermouse and Count Duckula but me I want my Alias. Anyhoo hope someone out there can shed some light on Boris and the Magic Ball. cheers Kev

I remember Boris The Bold, it was mid 70's if I recall and told the story of Boris, a woodsman, with a big black beard. I began to think that I had imagined the whole thing, a bit like Tomfoolery.

About Sam and the Magic Ball: Toonhound says a little about it. You're right: it does predate Cosgrove Hall (which was founded in 1976). The series started around 1972, a year after Mark Hall left Granada TV to form Stop Frame Animations. Brian Cosgrove joined Hall for Sam and the Magic Ball, their first co-production. The series is said to have been filmed in Brian's garden shed!
