Roller-skating series You Must Register Before You Can Post

I thought it was Hanna Barbera, but I can't find it at all.

It was like Wacky Races, but they were roller skating (this was before roller-blading). I thought it was called Hailey's Comets or Hailey's Comics or Bailey's Comets, but I can't find it under either of these titles.

It was one of those quick-to-Sunday cartoons. I never watched it cuz I never could find it.

Anyone else recall it or no how to find it?

Re: Roller-skating series [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

It was BAILY's comets. I rember seeing this on Sunday as well. I had never even heard of "wacky Races" until much later even though they were on at the time I was watching. I was certain that Captain Good or Yogi's Space race was a take on "The Horrible" HYdes" of this cartoon. This was a raccing team of good guys who turned evil at jsut the wrong moment, thoguh they apparently had no control over this. One thing about this cartoon that set it appart form "Wacky races" is that ALL the teams except the Comets themselves seemed to be cheating badguys (with a few neutrals).
I swore this toon was HB, and that it was just called "The COmets". Only later did I find it was actaully a Ruby-Spears production. If there's a Ruby-Spears message board that's where this post belongs

Joe Ruby and Ken Spears created "Bailey's Comets" for DePatie Freleng Productions. Ruby and Spears were writing and creating shows for different studios (Hanna-Barbera, Krofft live-action) in the mid-1970s before forming their own studio in 1978 with "Fangface" as their first program they produced.

Voices of
Daws Butler as Gabby the commentator
Don Messick as Dooter Roo the helicopter pilot who transports Gabby over the roller team action
Carl Esser (Fabian on "Pebbles and Bamm Bamm) as Barnaby Bailey
Jim Begg as Pudge
Kathy Gori as Sarge
Sarah Kennedy as Bunny
Frank Welker

The series ran on CBS on Saturdays for half a season in 1974 and then moved to Sunday mornings for the remaining half of the season in 1975. There were 18 different teams that the Comets competed against...which became rather cluttered.

RB was such an influence on the style of HB shows, both art & story, that when they set up their own shop it was hard to tell them apart.

Just for the record, the other teams were:

1) The Black Hats
2) The Broomer Girls
3) The Cosmic Rays
4) The Dr. Jekyll/Hydes
5) The Duster Busters
6) The Gargantuan Giants
7) The Gusta Pastas
8) The Hairy Madden Red Eyes
9) The Mystery Mob
10) The Ramblin' Rivets
11) The Rock 'n' Rollers
12) The Roller Bears
13) The Roller Coasters
14) The Stone Rollers
15) The Texas Flycats
16) The Yo-Ho-Hos

Whew! That was a lot!

I was off by 2. Tongue I barely recall watching the show. I guess it was a Wacky Races knock-off but the Comets team characters and the 16 rival teams weren't too memorable. Daws Butler's Gabby voice was an imitation of then-popular sports announcer Howard Cosell, I think.

It's listed on BCDB under the incorrect title Bailey's Comet.

My knowledge for most cartoons comes from watching the original tv shows when they were first broadcast or on DVD or Video.

Also owning books on cartoons (Television Animated Series by Hal Erickson (covering programs up to 1996) and Children''s Television Vol 1 Animated Series from 1950 to 1979 by George Woolery) helps. Love those McFarland Publishers guys! Best reference books on tv and movie entertainment bar none!

Some of my info comes from books, some from websites, some from research. But mostly I get my knowledge from being an avid toon watcher for nearly 3 decades.

It's true that I only actually recall a few of the rival teams. I remember the Jekyl/Hydes pretty well, also the Rock 'n' Rollers, and the Broomer Girls and the Ramblin' Rivets (I remember seeing these latter 2 teams, but I didn't know their names until I read up on the subject).

As for the Comets themselves, the team consisted of Barnaby Bailey (team captain), competent female Candy, ditzy blond Bunny, fat guy Pudge, bespectacled Wheelie and Sarge (a woman whose voice and demeanor resembled that of a drill seargant, hence the name.)

Re: Roller-skating series [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

All of my toon knowlege comes from watching cartoons (which I have done ritually for over thirty years now), books about cartoons (The Encyclopedia of Animated Cartoons is a good reference, one of many) and the occasional visit to a website.

I've been a cartoon freak for a loooong time!

Other than the Hydes, the only teams I can recall are the roller bears, the Stone Rollers, which must have been the team of cavemen and the dinosaur, and the Broomer Girls, which were a team of witches. There was also a team with a mad scientist and a bunch of robots, and can't recall which.

The scientist & robots team may have been The Ramblin' Rivets. I remember them, but I never knew what they were called.

I recall the Comets themselves, the Broomer Girls, the Jekyl/Hydes, and the Rockin' Rollers. The rest is a blur.

Re: Roller-skating series [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

This sounds like a remarkable idea that was poorly executed, much like the Fox Network would do later on with their primetime shows in the eighties and nineties; like it just left the developing board too soon.

By comparison, Laff-A-Lympics was already established characters.

Wacky Races, one of the most phenomenal and I suspect the inspiration for Bailey's Comets, had a different direction.

The plot was Dick Dastradly and Muttley must lose each and every episode no matter what. Not just lose but come in last place each and every time.

this was the plot, not the race.

Gradually the development took place with Penelope Pitstop (voiced by Janet Waldo, she couldn't miss), and with Arkansas Chug-a-bug, Surplus Special and Rufus Roughcut, as well as the cavemen, the other racers began to stand out.

Pat Pending and the Blue Max were clearly sacrificed while the cavemen and the Anthill mob stood out.

But it seems none of this took place with Bailey's Comets.

I remember there was a hero type in BC, which the closest WW had was Peter Perfect, but he is a joke on that idea as well.

Anyone care to count all the characters?

Let's see, with Wacky Races it was 23 (excluding the dragon on the creepy coupe). I do count animal sidekicks, like the bear and the beaver, as well as all seven Anthill mobsters, tho I think their characters were developed out more in the Penelope Pitstop cartoon, weren't they?

So how many exactly does Bailey's Comets have? We hit, what? -- fifteen teams?

Five each, ninety characters? In one half hour cartoon?

Yogi's Space Race took the almost opposite direction from Wacky Races. There are several wins for Phantom Phink and Captain Good each. Most of the others only got one win. Since ahntom Phink and Captian are really one and the same, the bad guys win almost every time!
