"The Scooby-Doo Show" Intro
|
|
|
Does anyone know exactly what episodes (representing the 1976-77, 1977-78 and 1978-79 release seasons) making up the The Scooby-Doo Show intro are pieced together from? The 1976-79 episodes were run under this title only since 1980. The same question arises as to what the original 1976 intro that is The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour had looked like, which of course would also have scenes from Dynomutt: Dog Wonder, the hour's other segment, and slightly different lyrics that of course contain references to Dog Wonder. The D:DW episodes would be from the 1976-77 season only. About 25 seconds into the 1980 package intro, Shaggy's arms are missing. What gives? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBIxHBDKfQg ~Ben

Oh, the intro didn't actually have any clips from the show, I believe. The two monsters I recognize immediately are Merlin (Scared a Lot in Camelot) and the 10,000 Volt Ghost (Watt a Shocking Ghost). The shark, the ghost and the witch doctor aren't in any episodes from the show, which is weird, since this new intro was made AFTER all of the episodes were released. Ah well, I guess they're just bonus treats for us Scooby fans. BTW, out of boredom, I went Youtube surfing and found this clip. http://www.youtube.com/...&feature=related Maybe someone can explain to me the point of that vid. It's not clever, funny, or entertaining in any way. I have the dough, so get cooking!

-CrazyCam Actually, the shark does appear in one episode: "There's a Demon Shark in the Foggy Dark" (air date: November 25, 1976). It is the scene where he's chomping away on Scooby's surf skis, with Shaggy gasping in response. Other observations: *Scooby "hot dogging" on his snow skis is from the same episode from which you picked up the "10,000 Volt Ghost" reference ("Watt a Shocking Ghost"). *The transparent ghost scene could be an allusion to a scene from "The Ghost of the Bad Humor Man" (air date: December 11, 1976). *Shaggy opening the door to introduce Scooby's cousin, Scooby-Dum, is from "The Headless Horseman of Halloween" (air date: October 9, 1976). But what episode has the Scooby cousins giving high-fives and laughing? Additionally, the original 1976 intro also had the following scenes from "Dynomutt": *Dynomutt vacuuming up (while also flying via his "Dyno-Copter") what he thinks is the bad guy and is instead revealed to be his sidekick, Blue Falcon (from "Don't Bug Super Thug," I think), at which Dynomutt's eyes spring out aghast. *Dynomutt and Blue Falcon with Scooby-Doo is from "What Now, Low Brow?" which also has a prototype version of said character climbing up a tall building. ~Ben

Sweetness. Well, glad the shark played a fine role in the show. BUT UH, yeah, the other two ghouls, I have no idea what they were inspired by. Well, they looked cool anyway.

The original 1976 theme song's lyrics have been found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG8uJGZTRMw Yes, it is audio only and set to footage discovered by Aaron Handy III (the 8mm footage was previously available on YouTube by some user whose account was banned), but this is getting us one step toward realizing what the original 1976 intro had looked like. (Cue singing saw) Narrator (Gary Owens, also Blue Falcon/Radley Crown): "THE SCOOBY-DOO / DYNOMUTT HOUR!" (spoken while horns cue in) (Horns and organ) Scooby: "Scooby-dooby-doo!" Dynomutt: "And Dynomutt, Dog Wonder!" (Dogs laughing) Lyrics are traded off between the voices of Velma and Daphne (by Pat Stevens and Heather North respectively) and Fred and Shaggy (by Frank Welker and Casey Kasem respectively). V/D: "They got it all together and you know what?" Scooby: "No, what?" F/Sh: "Scooby-Doo is hangin' 'round with Dynomutt!" Dynomutt: "That's me!" V/D: "While Scooby-Doo is tangling with a spooky ghost" F/Sh: "Dynomutt is catching crooks from coast to coast" CHORUS: V/D: "They make a super pair" F/Sh: "With a super show to share" Scooby: "Scooby-dooby-doo!" Dynomutt: "And Dynomutt, Dog Wonder!" (Laughing) (Instrumental break) CHORUS: REPEAT Narrator: "Scooby-Doo and Dynomutt, Dog Wonder!" (spoken) Scooby: "Scooby-Doo!" Dynomutt: "And Dynomutt!" (both dogs laugh at fade) For Scooby's 1980 repackaging as The Scooby-Doo Show, not only were the lyrics altered to remove all references to Dynomutt, but different singers were drafted to sing these replacement lyrics. A similar move was done when The (New) Tom & Jerry/Grape Ape/(Mumbly) Show had been split up for syndication after 1977: the original '75 intro featured the voices of the star characters singing their tune (as here), but on the repackaging for both The Tom & Jerry Show and The Mumbly Cartoon Show, different voices were used in singing the replacement lyrics. ~Ben

That's awesome! I saw the video without audio back a couple of years ago when it was on youtube, and was hoping the audio would turn up likely from someone who made a cassette tape of the show!

Thanks for the link! BTW, in case anyone doesn't know -- I noticed the "Pocket Flix" name on part of this clip. "Pocket Flix" was a product marketed in the mid-to-late 1970s that used super 8mm silent film. They had a viewer and (separately) sold a lot of different cartridges of various TV shows and cartoons. Wow, to think that something considered "lost" was out there all along. That might explain the added superimposed show title (apparently done on a computer) and the still photo or two inserted here or there. The whole complete intro probably isn't all there -- I had (of all things) the Hardy Boys (from the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries) and only a few seconds of the show opening was on there -- just enough for the words "Hardy Boys" to appear on screen. I had forgotten all about this until I saw this clip.

In fact, the user who originally uploaded the 8mm footage on YouTube back in 2008 was "12TVCartoon." And yes, there was a Pocket Flix reel of Dynomutt (there is a dark blue screen with the text "DYNOMUTT" and below that, "(c) 1978 HANNA-BARBERA PRODUCTIONS, INC." spliced in between the original 1976 opening footage). Pocket Flix was in fact first introduced in '78, at which point Dynomutt was to break away from Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics and go out on his own for the summer Saturday morning schedule (and beyond). There were also Pocket Flix reels for Laff-A-Lympics and Scooby-Doo Where Are You!. One curious question arises out of this: any closing credits on these super 8mm reels? ~Ben
