Screwy Squirrel
|
|
|
What's everybody's opinion of that MGM classic Screwy Squirrel? I ask this because historically he is known as the most irritating character of all time. He even irked his creator Tex Avery. I'd just like to know what y'all think.

One of MGM's prime irritants.

A character which demonstrated that, believe it or not, even the great Tex Avery could go too far!

AH! I can handle Screwy just fine. At least he's not sucky and boring like Casper or Babar or even Andy Panda. THOSE characters I find irritating.

If find Casper or Babar or even Andy Panda sort of benignly boring. Screwy, on the other hand, was actively annoying! It was ALMOST as if Tex was trying too hard to out Tex himself... and was well too far beyond what is entertaining (to me!)

There's a certain kind of wall that blocks the insanity of the good cartoon characters from going too far. Screwy Squirrel shoved dynamite in that wall and lit it by breathing fire.

I enjoy Babar. It's a gentle and almost elegant cartoon. I don't find it boring. Casper was kind of a one-trick-pony. I recall liking the comic more than the cartoon. FWIW, I saw the original Casper on ToonHeads the other day. Ummmm...interesting is about all I can say. I've never cared for Andy Panda, although I haven't seen anything with him in it in years.

I remember seeing a live-action Babar show a long time ago. Now THAT was weird.

Actually it would be more like 7 minutes. However, put all his films together and its 35 minutes.

I like the Screwy cartoons because of some of the self-referential jokes, but I don't particularly like the character of Screwy himself. (His voice has a lot to do with it.) I don't think Tex was too crazy about him, either, since he killed him off after a few cartoons. "Sad ending, isn't it?"

Not only that, Screwy wore himself out in his first 3 cartoons. After that, there was nowhere to go but into obscurity.[unsure]

I don't think that. I just think he was annoying.... and juvinile. To me, the humor (?) does not work... it seems strained from the get-go. Just too much.

That is the best way I know how to describe how I feel about him... too much. He is the poster child for over the top to me. They threw every little gag to him, and there is no real story or anything to hang those gags on. I HATE his voice. I am reminded what the Emperor said to Mozart about one of his operas... too many notes. I hope I am not that silly... just too much.

I'd rather have too much than too crappy. Crap is crap whether it's over-stated or under-stated. Screwy Squirrel is an abrasive character but all of his films were made by an ingenious director. Could you imagine Screwy in incompetant hands?

I, personally, liked Screwey Squirl. I guess a cartoon just can't get "too" out of control with me. I think he left his imprint in toon history. I didn't really like his voice, though. Just didn't seem to fit a "main character".

YOUR ALL FORGETING ABOUT 'JOHNNY BRAVO' IS MORE ANNOYING THEN SCREWY SQUIRREL WILL EVER BE!
IT IS EASIER FOR A PEACOCK TO SHOW IT's TRUE COLORS -- THEN A LION TO EAT HIS PRIDE! STAR FOX!

I don't mind Johnny Bravo either. However, Screwy practically re-invented annoying back in 1944. Loooong before Johnny came along.
