Genndy Tartakovsky has been attached to direct and develop Sony Pictures Animation's 3D movie Popeye.
SPA production president Michelle Raimo-Kouyate and production senior vice-presient Michael Lachance will oversee the movie for the studio, which wanted to put Tartakovsky on another project soon after the end of production for Hotel Transylvania, which he also directed. Sony will release Hotel Transylvania in September.
With SPA, Avi and Ari Arad will produce Popeye under their Arad Productions banner. David Ronn and Jay Scherick were attached to write the script as of last November.
Sony Pictures Animation declined comment on the news.
In movies, the spinach-eating sailor appeared in Robert Altman's 1980 live-action musical, also called Popeye, starring Robin Williams.
Meanwhile, Tartakovsky is attached to direct a feature version of Cartoon Network's TV series Samurai Jack, which he created as well.
SPA's most recent movie release, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, was co-produced with Britain's Aardman Animations and came out March 30. Budgeted at $55 million, it made $104 million worldwide.

I know that a lot of people aren't going to like the fact that this new Popeye feature film is going to made in 3D, which means that it will be CGI, but at least it's animated.

Also, if it's by Tartakovsky, it may actually be pretty good.
