Should Rankin-Bass OZ series be released on DVD?
|
|
|
I think the "Tales of the Wizard of Oz" 1961 should be released on a DVD set, same as the 1960 "New Adventures of Pinocchio" series. Besides, if then, I think Classic Media and Warner Home Video should distribute the disc set. I mean, Classic Media owns the rights to the Oz cartoon, but Warner Bros. would be PERFECT to release it as a "Classic Rankin-Bass Series" set since they own nearly all the Rankin-Bass cartoons. The prints I have seen recently are so-so. Several of the episodes are too darkened or scratchy. And some episodes are beautifully remastered. I think Warner could do a great job restoring the cartoons. After all, their DVD prints of "Looney Tunes" and "Scooby-Doo" are really good! Anyone else think this is a good idea?

I've heard collectors looking for both these Rankin-Bass classics. I don't believe I have ever seen them. I'm in support of SONY releasing all their Classic Media animation. Do they own "Super-Chicken"? "Tom Slick"? What makes these R+B cartoons stand out for you?

Maybe cause they're not like other Rankin-Bass cel-animation (not including "Return To Oz," which has some character modifications of them). The animation is somewhat reminiscent of the UPA cartoons, they do a funny take on the classic Oz books (and the MGM film), they have very humorous jokes, and they have a distinctive, likeable voice cast! Although there is some background music, it sometimes resembles the Jay Ward style. BTW, Super Chicken and Tom Slick ain't on DVD yet!

I understand that these cartoons are not available now. I was just wondering if SONY classic media owns them. Thanks for responding so well to my inquiry about the R&B toons. Now, I want to see them even more.

I am certain they would. Buena Vista/Disney HAS released them to home video in the mid 1990s before.

Yes, BOTH of Tom Slick and Super Chicken. They were released with "George of the Jungle" mid-90s tapes.

I missed out. I got the "George of the jungle", but I never saw the "Super Chicken" or "Tom Slick". I would so want a DVD set of Super Chicken. I would have to see Tom Slick again, to know if I would collect it.

Super Chicken and Tom Slick were both separate segments that aired on the George of the Jungle show. Last time I saw one of the George of the Jungle tapes, it had a Tom Slick and a Super Chicken segment on it.

Not the licensed tapes I purchased. George is the only character on those tapes. Thanks for the info.

My brother remembers Super Chicken and Tom Slick on the George of the jungle tapes he has. He says he will dig them up for me, but I'm not holding my breath. I must have purchased a later set or something? (I really want to see Super Chicken toss down some sauce.)

Sorry to bump this thread, too, but I was wondering who was in the voice cast. I remember seeing an animated version on TV that had Paul Lynde as "Pumpkinhead" and Milton Berle as the Cowardly Lion... I think that one was done by Filmation, though. On a slightly different note... I was recently watching my DVD of R-B's "The Little Drummer Boy" and noticing how murky and occasionally scratchy it looked. It looks as though a 16mm print was used for the digital remaster (maybe the original 35mm elements no longer exist?)
