Singing star Betty Hutton dies at 86

Betty Hutton died in Palm Springs, California, a friend comfirmed Monday. The time and cause were unavailable.
She was a bold, brassy singer who appeared in such Hollywood musicals as Annie Get Your Gun. She also starred in the incredibly risque Preston Sturges comedy The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944).
She debuted at 21 in The Fleet's In (1942). The was in a critical and box office bomb, Dream Girl (1948), and became unhappy with her career.
Other movies included Red, Hot and Blue (1949), Annie Get Your Gun (1950 -- she was nominated for a Golden Globe), The Greatest Show on Earth (1952) and Somebody Loves Me (1952).
Hutton walked out of her Paramount contract in 1952, reportedly in a dispute over her demand that her then-husband, Charles O'Curran, direct her films. Thereafter, she made only one movie (1957's Spring Reunion) and appeared in the short-lived TV series The Betty Hutton Show.
Occasionally, she did nightclub appearances.
In 1974, she began work as a cook and housekeeper in a Rhode Island rectory. In recent years, she lived in quiet retirement.
She was married four times. Her third husband, Alan Livingston, was the creator of Bozo the Clown. Her fourth, Pete Candoli was a jazz musician who can be heard on the soundtracks of Pink Panther and Ant and the Aardvark cartoons.
