Target Age Group - Saturday Morning Cartoons You Must Register Before You Can Post

Does anyone here know the target age group (the viewing audience) that classic Saturday morning cartoons as The Bugs Bunny Show, The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo had appealed to, from the 1950s to the 1980s?

My guess is the entire grade school gap, ages 5 to 12, and possibly some junior high and senior high school students aged between 12 and 16.

What do you say?

You're going back too far. Both The Flintstones and The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show premiered in 1960 and in prime-time. The latter didn't move to Saturday mornings until 2 years later. The LT/MM shorts, of course originally aired in theaters and were aimed at a general, not just kids. Scooby Doo, Where Are You? didn't premiere until 1969 (which is also the year I was born!).

Sure, I know SD premiered in '69 and those two others back in '60, but I mean the whole genre of classic cartoons on TV in general, Saturday mornings or otherwise.

The Flintstones was the 1st animated prime-time sitcom, so it wasn't aimed at kids when first ran. Any series that ran on prime time was aimed at a general audience and therefore was not considered "kid-vid".

Ages 14 and up. Especially when sponsors such as Winston cigarettes contributed their dues.

"14"? I wasn't alive then, but I'm pretty sure that Winston wasn't trying to encourage teenagers to smoke. Some did anyway, of course, but sponsors weren't specifically targeting them, and the Winston ads certainly weren't being aimed at teens. Heck, no cigarette ads were ever aimed at teenagers, not even up to when they were banned from TV in 1971.

Any Kid-Vid series which aired on SatAM it can be assumed that said series was aimed at kids aged 6-11 generally, but we can't include The Flinstones in it's initial airing, because it wasn't considered a kids' cartoon back then. In the 1960s, The Flintstones was aimed at adults, not teenagers and not children.

If I'm not mistaken, the 1st American sitcom that centered on a teenager was The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1953), but we're burying the lead here.

I think there's a slight bit of confusion. "The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show" ran from 1978-1985. "The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour" on the other hand ran from 1966-1968. Needless to say, the only "Looney Tunes"-related show that began in 1960 was "The Bugs Bunny Show."

The above is true and I apologize for any confusion, but the LT/MM shorts didn't start airing on television until 1960, so bringing up the 1950s in this instance serves no purpose. That was my point.

I thought that premiered in 1959.

My guess would be...The Age Group was at the time Grade School Ages (5-14).

It wasn't until 1996 when E/I came and SatAM Cartoons were aimed more for Preschoolers as well for 3 Hours.
