Tom & Jerry Golden Collection, Vol. 1 You Must Register Before You Can Post

Well it's official... Warner Bros. and Turner Entertainment will be releasing, on October 25, the first of a planned 2-volume set of the complete MGM Tom & Jerry theatrical cartoons from 1940-1958.

Jerry Beck has been quoted as saying that the visual-quality of the cartoons will be better than what we got with the Spotlight Collections. The Golden Collection will be released simultaneously in Blu-Ray and DVD formats.

Jerry has also mentioned that original elements for at least 6 T&J titles have recently been discovered in the MGM film vaults; elements that apparently were stored elsewhere at the time of the 1967 fire which had destroyed the original nitrate prints and camera negatives for virtually every MGM cartoon produced before 1950.

This means that collectors may be getting at least 6 cartoons with original titles; as these elements are reportedly from first releases, not reissue versions.

In addition, Jerry stated recently that "Mouse Cleaning" will be included in the Golden Collection; but that because it is still undergoing restoration on the original nitrate negative, it will come out instead on Volume 2.

Amazon.com has both the DVD and Blu-Ray versions available for pre-order; at a savings of about 30% off the retail price.

Re: Tom & Jerry Golden Collection, Vol. 1 [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

OK, the Blu-Ray and DVD sets were released last week. Has anyone here purchased and viewed either set? If so, what are your reactions? Elsewhere online I've read that 10 cartoons on Volume 1 were remastered using inferior original elements; but that the other cartoons on the set look and sound great.

I will most likely purchase the DVD set if it is an improvement over the older "Spotlight Collection"; but I'd like to find out first if there's much difference in visual-quality between the DVD and Blu-Ray editions.

I intend to keep my old spotlight's though, just because the copy of "Bowling Alley-Cat" is reportedly better than that on the new Golden Collection.

This new set basically rehashes most of the bonus features from the older set; particularly the audio commentaries by Earl Kress (who, sadly, is no longer with us) and MAD-TV's Nicole Parker. Kress's comments are eminently-valuable; all the more so now that he's gone... Parker's comments I found to be of less value.

I believe that there are also some new commentaries recorded exclusively for this set.

Wel, enough from me for now... let's hear from the rest of you. Bruce? Ethan? David? I'd like to hear your thoughts especially.

What years are the 2 volumes covering? Will the volumes have any of the Chuck Jones shorts?

Re: Tom & Jerry Golden Collection, Vol. 1 [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

So far as I know, the two volumes will contain all of the classic T&J theatrical shorts directed by Hanna-Barbera; in chronological order.

Besides, the Chuck Jones T&J's were previously released to DVD already. I haven't heard about any plans for a Blu-Ray reissue.

"Mouse Cleaning" was not included in Volume 1 because reportedly it is still undergoing restoration.

The release of Volume 2 will, I think, depend heavily upon sales of the first volume.

I never got any of the Spotlights, Zav, so this was perfect for me. The most annoying thing is being unable to skip past the disclaimer.

"Less value" is a wonderful euphemism. And Poor Earl sounded like he had a bad cold.

The huge corporation making money from these didn't even have the courtesy to tell anyone their commentaries were being reused. I had to tell Mark Kausler he was on the discs.

Mark did a great job with 'Puss Gets the Boot' and I learned a pile of things from him.

I just hope that this new set doesn't have those annoying disclaimers by Whoopi Goldberg; warning viewers about the fact they're about to see an overweight black woman from the waist down in about a dozen out of, what... 92 cartoons?

No, Zav, the disclaimer is a title card decrying how "wrong" the cartoons are. And I can't skip past it, or fast forward through it on three different video programmes.

I've been holding off from buying this set until I can get a gander at the "Terrible 10" shorts that were reportedly remastered from inferior elements.

Does anyone here have frame-grabs of these, from this set and the older Spotlight Collection, that they can post in this thread for comparison purposes?

Re: Tom & Jerry Golden Collection, Vol. 1 [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

Sorry if i'm late, but Zavkram, 1950 should have also have been the year where MGM transferred all the original camera nitrate elements to practically everything to non flammable safety film, apparently what caused the electrical fire was indeed the nitrate format and also possibilities of extremely careless handling and also not storing them to a safe Nitrate film archive just in time, it's like Ray Pointer said - Nitrate film prints are not a safe idea to have in your own home or studio, instead put it somewhere where it wont catch fire, like a safe film library archive dedicated to professional handling and such.

It's really REALLY too bad we can longer see any Tom and Jerrys or any MGM cartoons in their REGULAR form anymore, just like regular versions of Walter Lantz/ Universal cartoons which are still around and have survived after all these years.

Interestingly, though, MGM (like Walter Lantz) made no alterations whatsoever (unlike *cough* Warner Bros with their annoying, irritating and confusing Blue Ribbon reissues, or Disney on some, but not all on their reissues) to the regular negatives for their reissues, instead printing them on separate prints, good work MGM, and besides i'm a lion myself and at one point i played Tanner who opened the MGM cartoons, so i can always get sucked in watching the MGM cartoon films.
